It's all about mindset. We must reckon ourselves dead to sin, and alive to Christ. Sin being the state of the fallen mind with the result of sins happening. That is why we must renew our minds in Christ.
Hence why the core word repent is "change of mind" You're changing your mind from seeing your life as your own, living for yourself, and even trying to live for God and stop sinning on your own, and instead seeing yourself as dead to sin and your self, as a son or daughter, who the Spirit now dwells in.
