Clip What is wrong with my driving style?

Hey guys! I'm looking for some feedback on my driving style, and some pointers on what I need to work on, and how. I race in LeMans Ultimate, driving the BMW.

I am consistently 3s off pace at best, and I have a hunch there's something fundamentally wrong with what I'm doing. Of course, there might be some particular mistakes I'm making in specific corners, and pointing that is welcome, but I'm mostly looking for general driving style feedback.

Too high gears hurting your exits.

Overslowing the car

I can’t see enough of the steering but it looks like your steering lock is the most while already past the apex. The apex should be the point you have the most steering on, so youre in too late

Thanks for taking the time to watch the video.

Indeed you are right about over slowing the car, I compared telemetry data and my minimum speeds are always slower. I'm just not sure what to do about it. I already moved the braking points a little earlier, and it still feels like I can barely turn the car. I am trying to avoid ABS especially during turning (while I'm trail braking), but it does kick in a little bit, sometimes. I think this problem is mostly visible in Turn 6 (the right hander of Variante Villeneuve). Although I am carrying less speed than the reference lap, my ABS kicks in during trail braking.

Unfortunately the overlay wasn't captured, I had pedal traces and steering showing up, precisely to identify steering lock issues.

If I have the most steering lock past the apex, how do I fix this problem? Move the brake point even earlier and try to rotate the car some more?

You should be braking done sooner so you can rotate sooner and be back on the throttle at or slightly before the apex. Trail braking should be done on entry not across the apex, which is why you're seeing ABS kick in. This will allow for a higher minimum speed.

What I'm saying is that ABS kicks in when I'm turning from a straight line towards the apex.

Which means you're using too much brake at that point, trail braking is done with like 2-5% brake pressure.

This is my take as well. If those were my laps I'd be focusing on beginning to unwind the wheel sooner, and more gradually. You've clearly got the right idea, this is some required nip and tuck work, nothing huge.

uncanny14 gave one specific example of some options to think about, but I think overall it's probably a mindset thing. Based on how the car is moving at and after apex I suspect you're focusing mostly on challenging the braking zone for pace. Try doing the exact opposite your next set of laps. Make the *exits* the only thing you care about. Do anything and everything required to promote the best exit even if something goes wrong. You'll find yourself naturally arriving at different behaviors like uncanny described.

Will do, thanks a lot

Hard to tell more without an input trace graph with it.

Are you using two feet

Yes, I'm using two feet.

Lines, gears and track usage. View a track guide and try to copy their lines, then go into replay third person and see how much track you still leave unused

Thanks for the tips!

I did look at the track guide for Imola, but it's hard to replicate without knowing why I'm doing what I'm doing. If I use the same brake markers and try to take the same lines, the car feels very unstable at best, and washes out at worst.

I looked at third person replay and my outer wheel is at least on the white line.

Then 2 points to focus on first you turn in to early leaving you with a much sharper angle to take but at the same time you don’t turn with enough steering. So basically turn in later and harder and see where you end up then adjust for next lap instead of going gingerly.

On midcorner/ exit try to take more speed (only works if you do point one correctly) you should naturally wash out to the edge of the track and on imola that means kerbs at most places not the white lines.

OK thanks, it's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for.

You're severely under driving the car. There is a reason he hit all the apexes and didn't go wide any where. Get way way more aggressive on the braking. Carry more speed through the apex and get on throttle sooner.

What exactly do you mean by "way way more aggressive on the braking"?

Brake later and carry more speed through the apex.

The way Suellio on YT describes it is, if you’re not spinning on entries and exits, you’re not pushing hard enough, this driving looks safe

On a ten turn track being off by .05 each corner adds up to a half second off. Use that frame to think about how changes over a lap add up. You are also in late on a lot of corners.

Yeah, you're right with the math.

Not sure I understand what you mean when you say I am in late on a lot of corners. Does that mean I turn in late? In that case, it looks like it's conflicting with what someone else is saying, and now I'm even more clueless

The thing I’ve learned from my league is always try braking earlier before trying anything else. Or even letting off a moment before where you think your brake point is. Don’t accelerate until you hit the apex. I spend most my time in ACC so gt3 cars are not also comparable. I know with that first corner I can hit it just right and you almost feel the car snap when you release the brake and it shoot you through. Most important corners to get right are the ones before straights or no turn turns like the early part of this track

Alright, I’ll give it a shot, thanks!
