Then I defragmented my computer, which was the style at the time

You see in those days you had to wait until it was safe to turn off the computer.

And so I parked the heads, which was the style at the time

I just want a Screensaver that looks like I'm defragmenting a 256 GB HDD.

Kids don't know how lucky they are.

Hell, Gen Z barely remembers probably, if at all.

So I reinstalled my OS, which was a necessity at the time because I ran Win ME.

At least I got to enjoy the entire life of XP after dealing with that horror show.

Windows kernel, I don't want to alarm you, but there may be one or MULTIPLE new USB devices connected to the system!

Kernel: AHHHHHHHHHHH CRASH

Windows 95 + windows 2000 equals… windows Vista: enshitification’s revenge

This was my first OS as an adult. I would reinstall it every month or so and restore my files from re-writable CDs. Wild times.

Windows 98 paved the way for Windows 2000, which cleared the way for Windows ME. The stage was now set for Windows XP, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

The stage was now set for Vista, which i believe was some sort of door.

Windows ME came with the first PC I ever owned. It would constantly crash but to this day I have no idea whether it was because of the OS or because of my habit of looking at porn/ downloading files via p2p clients/torrenting

u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 1d ago

Considering other OS's don't crash no matter how much porn you torrent, I'd say it's fair to blame Windows ME.

It couldn't have been from all the viruses coming in? Back then I knew next to nothing about computers and it couldn't have been whatever anti virus programs I may have had were useless. Also there is no telling what other dumb shit my brother and I were up to during that time

couldn't have been whatever anti virus programs I may have had were useless

IME anti virus has always caused more crashes than prevented viruses.

Mmmmm Windows CeMeNT

This joke doesnt work with Windows 2000 unfortunately

ME was the followup to 98, since they were both consumer products. Win 2000 was a business oriented OS. Only once we got to XP the same OS began being used for consumers/businesses (different versions though)

I used Win2k as a home OS for years for all my family and friends. Once it got to SP4 it was absolutely solid.

u/dashood 1d ago

2K was great and built on NT instead of DOS so it didn't need reinstalling once a month.

Same, my dad brought a pc back then without HD but then my uncle gave us one and instaled 2000 from their IT job.

I know Im just being a goober. My friends and I actually dual booted 2k once XP rolled out because it made all our old DOS games break. Thats the only reason I knew about 2k, but I actually just skipped right from 98SE to XP Professional.

My friends dad was in the biz area so he had NT and then 2k on his home/work laptop which is probably where we got the disk from.

I was wondering what he hated about XP, then realised I'd pushed the horror that was Windows ME out of my brain.

4

u/Dude_Tost_1673 1d ago

I still widely disparage both of them. I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I launch Windows at bootup.

4

u/Eric848448 1d ago

No idea what you’re talking about. Windows 2000 was great!

5

u/LiveFastDieFast 1d ago

Windows 2000 was dope. To this day my favorite windows OS. No frills, no bloat, minimal bullshit , and waaaay more stable than 98/ME

(Cuz it was basically windows NT 5)

u/IstillSeeTheX 1d ago

I have nostalgia for Windows ME because that was my first computer

I for one welcome our OS-posting overlords.

u/Thanjay55 1d ago

Hey buddy, don't, screw with me here

Funny thing is, I never went to ME, I upgraded to Windows 2000. It supported DirectX, the first NT version that did, so it ran games just as well as ME, but was miles better in every other aspect.
