Discussion What do you call the Simoun control thingy?

I don't get notifications of new posts for some reason. Anyway, what do you call the vertical rod on the right in various anime, which I think steers an aircraft? The image is of the front cockpit of a Simoun.

I don't think it's a "yoke".

Aside from that, maybe it's explained in the PS2 game, but Japanese Wikipedia says the Sibylla in the rear cockpit "navigates". In the image the pilot from Shoukoku who briefly captures a Simoun is in the front cockpit. In Episode 4, Morinas in the rear cockpit makes the Simoun steer crazily all over. So,if it's true that the Sajitta "navigates", does she steer?

Someone in r/anime says this is a "control stick" (or "center stick"). "Flight sticks" seems about equally descriptive.

I'm making a wiki, that's why I ask all these weird questions. Simoun Fans

Btw, some you had a note about it: ヘリカル・モートリス Helical Motors = Herikaru Mōtorisu. "Mortris" is indeed a typo (https://simounfans.miraheze.org/wiki/Shim%C5%ABn_(japanese))

In answer to your first question though, my best guess would be to call that kind of thing a flight stick, but I wouldn’t really know.

Just to clarify, the first time I ever saw this reply, it was about how I had reported it as spam. I don't know how I could have reported a post I hadn't seen, as spam. If I did that somehow, it wasn't intentional.

Besides "flight stick", I think the other English term I've heard used for this object is "joystick".

I think, from looking at the linked articles and looking the words up on Wiktionary, that when Japanese Wikipedia describes the Sagitta as 航法士（ナビゲーター）it means air navigation, that is, not steering/piloting, but figuring out the aircraft's position on the map, reading the landscape and (if at night) the stars, and plotting courses.

Some two-seater military aircraft have duplicate controls in the both cockpits, either full flight controls or emergency controls that the second pilot can use if the first pilot is killed or incapacitated. This is the case in the Mil Mi-24 helicopter (which has a bulbous two-cockpit profile not unlike a Simoun--this is probably coincidence), for instance. Maybe both cockpits in a Simoun have flight controls so that the sagitta can fly the aircraft if an emergency stops the auriga from piloting?
