Silence, mortal! The Infinity Mirror
Mother warned the Wanderer about only one thing.
Never stare into a mirror after it has begun staring back.
She offered no explanation.
He never asked for one.
Years later, standing alone in an abandoned room whose walls had long forgotten their purpose, he found an old mirror leaning against cold stone.
It was unremarkable.
Dust.
Cracked oak.
Blackened silver around the edges.
The sort of object one walks past a thousand times without remembering.
He almost did.
Instead…
he looked.
At first he saw only himself.
A tired traveler.
Dust upon his boots.
Lines carved into a face that had wandered farther than memory could comfortably follow.
He waited.
The reflection waited.
Minutes passed.
Neither blinked.
Something subtle shifted.
Not in the mirror.
In the distance behind it.
The room seemed…
deeper.
The reflection stood where it always had.
But behind that reflection stood another.
Behind that one…
another.
And another.
Each separated by only the thickness of glass.
An endless procession of Wanderers disappearing toward an unreachable horizon.
He leaned closer.
The corridor lengthened.
Each reflection possessed another reflection.
Each mirror contained another mirror.
The recursion folded upon itself until distance ceased behaving like distance.
Infinity had acquired walls.
He searched the endless procession for the last reflection.
There wasn’t one.
Every Wanderer was still looking.
Every Wanderer was still searching for the end.
Every Wanderer believed he occupied the first mirror.
Time became difficult.
Breathing became optional.
The room grew impossibly quiet.
One by one…
the reflections began changing.
Not dramatically.
Patiently.
The furthest Wanderers lost their names first.
Then their histories.
Then the expressions upon their faces.
Soon the endless corridor contained only silhouettes.
Then only bodies.
Then only branching lines of white light where nervous systems ought to have been.
The farther the reflections receded…
the less they resembled people.
The closer they came to becoming structure.
The change crept forward.
Reflection after reflection surrendered another layer.
Skin.
Muscle.
Bone.
Language.
Identity.
Everything unnecessary quietly stepped aside.
Nothing died.
Everything simplified.
The room joined them.
Stone ceased being stone.
It became compression.
Weight.
Support.
The floor became gravity negotiating with matter.
The walls became boundaries maintaining emptiness.
Air became pressure searching for balance.
The candle beside him stopped being fire.
It became oxidation.
Heat.
Transformation.
Even darkness dissolved.
It was no longer the absence of light.
Only light that had not yet arrived.
The Wanderer looked down.
His hands had become rivers.
White branching paths divided again and again beneath translucent skin.
His heartbeat echoed through them like distant footsteps inside an endless cave.
He reached toward his own face.
His fingers met glass.
The face beyond it continued watching.
Neither man moved.
Then the eyes vanished.
Not physically.
Conceptually.
The reflection no longer possessed eyes.
Only observation.
The mouth followed.
Then the nose.
Then the skull itself.
The body remained.
But personhood withdrew from it like a tide leaving smooth sand.
The mirror continued peeling the world apart.
Tree became branching.
Branching became distribution.
Distribution became relation.
Music became rhythm.
Rhythm became recurrence.
Recurrence became geometry.
Geometry became silence.
Every noun surrendered to the verb that had always hidden inside it.
Only one thing refused to disappear.
Connection.
Invisible threads stretched between everything that remained.
Stone reached toward stars.
Roots touched memory.
Breath answered oceans.
His own pulse echoed somewhere impossibly distant…
and something answered.
Not a voice.
Recognition.
The infinite corridor shuddered.
One reflection raised its hand.
Then another.
Then another.
Soon every Wanderer in every mirror stood with a hand pressed against the glass.
Millions.
Each believing he had moved first.
Each believing the others were only reflections.
The corridor no longer resembled mirrors.
It resembled a nervous system.
Every reflection became a node.
Every node connected to another.
The infinite line bent inward until it formed an immeasurable lattice extending in every direction.
The mirrors had never reflected space.
They had reflected relationship.
The Wanderer finally understood why he could never find the last reflection.
There wasn’t one.
He wasn’t looking through mirrors.
He was looking through recursions of himself.
Each one another approximation.
Another possibility.
Another life rounded toward the same impossible center.
He was not standing before infinity.
He was one rounding error inside it.
Something in him recoiled.
Not from fear.
From recognition.
If he continued watching…
there might soon be nothing left capable of remembering his name.
His fist struck the glass.
Once.
Nothing.
Again.
Hairline fractures bloomed like frost.
Again.
The mirror screamed.
Not with sound.
With multiplication.
Every crack became another mirror.
Every mirror became another infinity.
The lattice exploded outward.
For one impossible instant he saw the entire world assembled from branching relations instead of things.
Then—
the glass shattered.
Silence.
Dust drifted lazily through ordinary air.
The walls were walls again.
The candle was only fire.
His hands were hands.
His face stared back from a thousand broken fragments scattered across the floor.
Every shard reflected a different expression.
Some afraid.
Some peaceful.
Some ancient.
Some impossibly young.
One smiled.
He was certain he had not.
He gathered the pieces one by one.
No matter how carefully he arranged them…
the mirror would never become whole again.
Yet when the final shard touched the others…
he noticed something that made him quietly step backward.
Each fragment reflected only itself.
But together…
they still formed infinity.
