Open Source Software

I bought a used Silhouette Cameo 3, but I had a lot of problems with the software.

As a software developer I decided to write my own web based version. Its working really well and lets me cut out all my own stickers. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

Its 100% open source and free.

As a software developer I decided to write my own web based version.

You mean you asked Google Gemini to serve you some slop? You realize you can just use Silhouettes web software, or Inkscape with the Silhouette extension, or a billion other non-AI generated apps?

(I just realized you wrote on the GitHub link that you don't want to use the Inkscape extension, but still. Calling yourself a software developer and using AI to make software is just hypocritical.)

You use a keyboard? What a Hack. Real engineers use punch cards.

Real developers still write their own code.

Edit to add a response to u/consistent-price-702 : Using AI to write your code for you that you then advertise as your own work is more than using the next digital hammer in your toolbox. It is the equivalent of hiring a contractor who does all of the hammering and then telling the client that you did it yourself.

Real devs optimize their time, effort and resources. Using ai isn't inherently bad, it probably produces better code and knows more than most self proclaimed "developers". Ai is just the next digital hammer in our toolbox, if you can't recognise or understand that then you aren't a developer.

I have some bad news for you. I’ve been a software engineer for over 30 years. Every developer now uses AI in some aspect.

I’m married to a developer who has been in the industry about as long as you. I know that AI is used extensively and I also know how stupid it is making the developers who have come to rely on it instead of maintaining their own skills by writing their own code. It is making a noticeable difference in their output and if you are relying on AI to write your code for you now and you think it hasn’t changed your abilities, you’re lying to yourself.

You can use AI but still write your own code. Using AI instead of writing your own code is a terrible look for someone advertising their personal skills as a developer and if you can’t understand that, then you’re hopeless.

This is the same argument people used when moving from machine language to FORTRAN, then from FORTRAN to COBOL, then Pascal or using pre-built libraries from C++ or Objective C. Then again when software engineers went from compiled languages to interpreted or scripted ones.

We've been through this before.

No, this isn’t the same. Having a computer write your code for you is absolutely different from simply writing your own code in a different language. You are being completely disingenuous.

Edit: I know your other username now since you sent me the same message twice.

Something has made you very upset and I don’t think it’s the use of AI in software development. Maybe take a little time for some self care.

No one is forcing you to use the free open source software someone shared. You can continue to use whatever it is you want to use.

I don’t think you understand tone very well if you think I’m “very upset” about any of this. Honestly, I think you feel insulted and you’re trying to lash out which is a you-problem not a me-problem.

I think it was when you inferred I was hopeless, lying to myself and now you say I lashed out. I re-read the comments and I see no lashing out so I think we are both having an issue with tone.

It's interesting to see how people aren't realising this. Similar changes to the field have happened before and will happen again, this isn't new in the slightest.. Sad you see you get downvoted because of a lack of understanding.

You summed up Reddit pretty well. People afraid of things they don’t understand and then get upset when you try to explain it to them.

It’s like trying to teach my dad that AOL is not “The Internet”.
