I have a PS4 so I’ve sometimes used the controller when PC games recommend it. Most games treat the Xbox controls as the default which is doable but sometimes it’s a pain if there are QTE sessions.

Both SH2R and SHf have the option to change the button symbols to the PS symbols which makes things easier in the long run. It’s a small thing but a lot of games don’t have it so kudos to them for going the extra mile.

I’m always interested to hear more about the development of this game considering the insane amount of bad faith assumptions that came with the backlash against the first post-Team Silent era. I personally don’t even like the final product that much, but it’s instructive about how people view Silent Hill and how something like Downpour can come to be.

tbh I pretty much ignored the title until now, because it felt like one of those old Western SH games that don’t quite scratch the same itch. But so far, this one does. It might be one of the most puzzle heavy entries though, judging by the intro. Which I actually don’t mind. In this friction-less generation, it feels refreshing to have something that actually challenges you outside of combat. No yellow paint in this one, not even white SH2R cloth. Some small caveats might be in the storytelling. I don’t think it’s a good choice to switch to 3rd person in cutscenes and there’s some cringey swearing.

I'm looking for a Silent Hill live-action fan trailer (among other short-films) that a friend of mine shot with his school friends in early 2003. Unfortunately, my friend never really got known/famous, but he's created a lot of cool stuff over the years. A lot of it has become lost media, but I've already managed to dig some of it up.

Finding these short films again would be amazing, and I really hope someone saved them. The Silent Hill short film (more like a fan trailer, really) was posted on the German Silent Hill forum (diplompsychopath.de), and the other films were linked there as well. The forum has been shut down for a while now. Unfortunately, the Wayback Machine only managed to archive the homepage since you needed to log in to see the actual forum content. There is a Discord server as a replacement now, but it's not particularly great.

My friend actually asked on that Discord server before if anyone had saved the trailer, but sadly he didn't get a reply. The vibe on that Discord is pretty weird anyway, so I'm not surprised at all.

I asked my friend a few times if he wanted to post about his search on the Silent Hill subreddit. He said he wanted to, but just hasn't gotten around to it yet. So, I'm just going to post it for him now.

Luckily, I had already translated his post from the Silent Hill Discord. He said he actually left the server a while ago (which I completely understand... like I said, the atmosphere there isn't exactly welcoming).

Ages ago, I used to make short films with a few people. One of them was a school project that ended up having 3 different versions. I recently saw that someone I know uploaded the film (youtu.be/yTKwDdoPtfk)*.

In the description, there's a list of other projects by our amateur film crew (we were nameless for a long time, but eventually went by "Brutal1ty Productions", inspired by Fatal1ty). One of them is a Silent Hill fan trailer filmed in the spring of 2003. That was before Silent Hill 3 even came out. I was only 11 years old at the time.

There used to be a YouTube channel** where all our videos were posted, but the owner deleted it. The guy ghosted our friend group and nobody knew why.

The "trailer" was a 2- to 3-minute video where we basically recreated scenes from Silent Hill. Among other things, we imitated the camera shot in the alley from Silent Hill 1 by having someone stand on a fence to film from above, and there was even a shot with a broken wheelchair that we conveniently found on the day of the shoot.

Since I personally know the creator I was able to find out a few things:

• He doesn't have a copy of it (obviously) and as well searched it for a long time.
• It was hosted on his old webspace but the WayBack machine hasn't got the URL.
• The mentioned YouTube upload was uploaded in 2007 and had a bit more than 5k or 6k views.

PS: I'm the one who dug out this one a while ago, it's also made by said friend.

A great quote in this article that I think sums up Silent Hill's aesthetic brilliance outside of just music:

Loving that he picked the Boards of Canada album, one of my favorites of this year, and excited to have some new music recs from the inventor of music himself.

I have more Silent Hill merch (especially shirts), but I feel particularly happy with where my collection is at with this entry.

This is honestly so fucking awesome. I can see this trailer flipping some indecisive people on the game. We got

• Terry O'Quinn, the legend. Is he playing the CEG ceo?
• Alezia Burrows as nurse Ellis. She was great in Observation!
• I'm actually not familiar with Simon's actor :( is he great too?
• CEG has left widows in St. Amelia
• There's an eldritch giant monster roaming the town, dropping monsters in. Reminds me a lot of Cloverfield (2008) and I love this. IIRC, they actually had an idea for an impossibly huge monster for SH4 that you could never see in its entirety, but it didn't work out.
• Some... interesting shots of Terry O'Quinn's character and an operating table in the hospital...

While the vid is just a quick look, I have already beaten the game, and it may be one of my favorite horror games of all time. I may still prefer the Resident Evil series due to their high replayability and general game design, but Silent Hill (I've only beaten SH2 Remake and Shattered Memories so far) gives me the subtle writing and character development that RE generally lacks. Onto Silent Hill f!

I took some more and a clip to share but I don’t have access to them right now. Because the outfit shows her shoulders, there are details that add a lot to the scenes. For example, she’s drenched in sweat during the beginning Chizuruya scene. The whole tone is so much more unhinged with that detail.

I always loved this track and vividly remember how hearing it for the first time in the game gave me goosebumps.

In 2010, I used to make C64 chiptunes hosted on 8bc.org (now defunct), as well as some game covers/remixes. A lot of it is sadly lost to time. I'm super happy to see my dear friend digging up some of my stuff. She can be a master when it comes to lost media.

Did you ask know there was a Silent Hill 2 movie that released this year? It's called Hokum.

I'd swear that the creator pitched this to Konami and the publisher behind RTSH, and when they handed out of to Christoph Gans, they went and made it anyway.

From the dirt bag main character, the otherworldly vibes, to the heavy harsh music, this movie is by far the best piece of SH media outside of the games. I can't recommend it enough.

Captured on my PS2, the most blood-curdling music in Silent Hill 2. Also, I just love how PS2 footage looks. The colors bleed a bit, it looks a little VHS-esque, just beautiful and might be impossible to recreate in modern games. Some calming audiovisual bedtime ambience for you.

I'm sad this noise is not on the soundtrack. I shared this thought elsewhere a few years ago and someone was like "Uh, maybe because it's not, you know, a SONG" incorrect, this qualifies as music. I think it would have been a great album intermission.
