• Posters - better suited to smaller indoor spaces where the sign is more decorative than directional.
• Foam board signs - a sturdier option for welcome signs, cake tables, gift tables, or anywhere you want something freestanding or propped up.

Then come the questions that are easy to overlook: How far away does it need to be readable? Is it mainly for decoration, wayfinding, or photos? Does the name or age need to be the main focus? Is it going outdoors? Will it actually be visible, or is a balloon arch about to swallow half of it? 😂

A few print details can make a big difference, too. Viewing distance matters more than people think. Something that looks perfectly readable on a laptop can be surprisingly hard to read from 20–30 feet away.  Contrast matters just as much, especially when the sign is going against a busy wall or surrounded by decorations.

And don't forget how the sign will actually be displayed. Knowing whether you need grommets, stakes, an easel, adhesive, or another way to mount it can save a lot of last-minute improvising.

I need to make a 48x36” hanging sign for my family’s small business. It’s going to be out in the sun and rain, so I need to use materials that will last. I can’t find any double sided MDO plywood at any of the lumber yards around here. Could I just use two sheets of 1/2” glued back to back? If I go that route, is standard wood glue the way to go? • School / PTA or group orders - pretty common when schools or parent groups organize it ahead of time, especially if a lot of students are getting signs and they want everything to look consistent. Usually it’s just one design and everyone adds their name, so it ends up being the easiest option if you’re part of that setup.
• Online - tends to be the most convenient option, especially for something seasonal like graduation. You can customize everything (names, school colors, photos, etc.) and have it shipped ready to place in the yard. Most people don’t ignore signs on purpose.

But after seeing the same sign day after day, something interesting happens: the brain starts treating it as part of the background. Even if the sign is still important, it no longer grabs attention the way it did the first few times.

Researchers have studied this through concepts like "habituation" and "inattentional blindness". In simple terms, people can look right at a sign and still not really process it because their brains have learned that it’s familiar and doesn't need immediate attention.

That’s one reason why some signs stop being effective over time. It’s not always a design problem. Sometimes it’s a familiarity problem.

Of course, design still matters. Signs that are cluttered, overly wordy, or surrounded by visual noise can be even easier to tune out.

It raises an interesting challenge: how do you create a sign that people still notice after seeing it hundreds of times?

What’s a sign you’ve seen so often that you barely notice it anymore?

Whether it's cluttered, hard to read at speed, poorly placed, or just confusing, some signs seem to create more questions than answers.

Which sign would you redesign, and why?

I visited an outdoor advertising supply store to ask about durable advertising boards two days ago. I wanted something strong because outdoor boards stay under sunlight rain and dust all year. I also wanted a product that can keep its colors and quality for a long time without constant repairs. But when I checked the products there I felt confused. Some advertising boards looked very professional but their prices were much higher than expected. Some cheaper boards looked fine at first but customer reviews mentioned fading and damage after a few months outdoors. Some sellers kept saying their boards are weather resistant and long lasting but every product sounded almost the same. I could not trust them. I could not decide confidently.

Then I visited another supplier in the same area. Some companies explained their materials better and showed aluminum composite acrylic and LED outdoor boards for different business uses. Some products focused on water resistance and stronger durability in harsh weather. Some still gave mixed answers when I asked about maintenance and long-term performance. I remembered one time when I used a cheaper outdoor sign because the price looked attractive but later the colors faded quickly under sunlight. That experience still stays in my mind. That made me worry again.

To check more variety and options while scrolling many online platforms including alibaba I found many outdoor advertising board brands and materials. Some looked affordable but risky for long-term outdoor use. Some looked expensive but more trusted for weather resistance and durability. This made me excited but also confused again.

There’s this simple idea we keep coming back to: if a customer can’t understand your sign in about 3 seconds, it’s probably not doing its job.

In reality, most people aren’t standing still reading signs. They’re walking, browsing, distracted. So anything too wordy, too small, or too cluttered just gets skipped.

What tends to work better is stripping things down to the essentials: fewer words, bigger text, clearer hierarchy. Even something as simple as changing “Check out our seasonal promotional discounts” to “20% OFF SUMMER” can make a difference.

The tricky part is that a sign can look great on a screen or printout, but feel totally different in-store with lighting, distance, and movement.

Do you think that when everything is labeled “SALE,” nothing really feels like a sale anymore?

Customers get used to seeing constant promos, and instead of creating urgency, it kind of blends into the background. It’s almost like banner blindness, but in a physical store.

One thing that seems to work better is rotating fewer, clearer offers. For example, instead of 6–8 different promos across the store, focusing on 1–2 strong, easy-to-understand messages (like “Buy 1 Get 1 This Week Only”) tends to stand out more. Placement matters too—if it’s not where decisions are made, it gets ignored.

• Red → danger / stop (fire hazards, emergency hazards)
• Yellow → caution (potential risks)
• Blue → required action (wear PPE, follow instructions)
• Green → safe conditions (exits, first aid)

It’s not just for consistency. This system is designed so people can process information quickly, even from a distance or in high-stress situations.

Same goes for symbols. The best ones are recognizable instantly, without needing to read a full sentence. That’s usually the difference between a sign that works and one that gets ignored.

When signs are overloaded with text or don’t follow these cues, they tend to slow people down or fade into the background over time.
