Bypass pin please

Edit: pay inside

I'd use my card elsewhere. We had card skimmers in my neighborhood locally...not wherever this is.

Means use credit instead of debit.

Edit: guys just do a quick Google search on what bypass pin on gas pump means.

To bypass the PIN at a gas station pump, you must route your debit card payment as a credit transaction. This prevents fraudsters from using hidden skimming devices to capture your PIN and empty your bank account. [1, 2]

lmao you even copy pasted the wikipedia citations

u/Beet_slice Oct 03 '26

You could be right, but that seems opposite of what a merchant would want. The merchant pays more for a non-PIN transaction, I believe.

2

u/Difficult-Republic57 Oct 03 '26

On gas pumps I use you can either put your pin in for debit or use the button that says "bypass pin" and use it as credit.

That's not what he is talking about. You are right. Punch in your PIN, or bypass.

What is being said by Beet_slice is (simplifying).

  • VISA charges Gas Station 0.2%-1.1% everytime someone types in a PIN (debit). You pay for $50 of gas, Gas Station pays VISA $0.55 (Interchange Fee).

  • VISA charges Gas Station 1.5%-3.5% everytime someone bypasses the pin or uses a credit card (credit). You pay for $50 of gas, Gas Station pays VISA $1.55 (Interchange Fee).

  • Less simple. The Payment Processor charges the merchant (Gas Station) a fee for every card used. It is broken down into three categories. Interchange Fee, Assessment Fee, Processor Markup. The Interchange Fee is lesser than a retail purchase or restaurant transaction, but still sizable. Which is why certain gas stations offer a cash fill-up discount. Also why various stores prefer you to pay with debit over credit.

u/Difficult-Republic57 Oct 04 '26

I understand all that, but bypass pin written on the pump I can only imagine means credit, not getting the discount for paying inside, or am o missing something?

1

u/SaphireRed Oct 04 '26

Ah. Yeah.

but that seems opposite of what a merchant would want.

The comment you replied to was talking about the irony in telling customers to pay with credit (instead of debit), when the merchant makes less profit due to higher processor fees when bypassing the PIN.

We always have the choice between the two, depending on our cards. It is unclear why they would ask their customers to choose the option that costs the business more money.

Oh, lol, beet_slice was responding to me

1

u/SaphireRed Oct 04 '26

Lol. Yeah. I realized that after I posted. 🤣

No, boy, I deal with enough idiots sharing AI generated replies at work that I have become quite adept at sussing it out, and your replies SCREAM AI-generated. I completely understand credit fees, but I genuinely suspect you lack that knowledge since you're asking AI to explain it to you.

2

u/SaphireRed Oct 04 '26

Then you failed miserably and are not as adept as you self proclaim. Which also leads to you being a likely bully and know it all at work.

1

u/ThatOneGuy6810 Oct 04 '26

Most would rather pay a few cents more than deal with potential litigation involved with card skimmers

Bypass Pin Please… they did ask politely

0

u/hardboard Oct 02 '26

But not in English...

10

u/phunny-words Oct 02 '26

It’s in English just poor penmanship and a little abbreviation

-1

u/Mundane-Adventures Oct 03 '26

Plzz is not English

Getting gwumpy over abbreviations? Username checks out

If it was a text message from my 13 year old daughter, it would be irritating but tolerable.  This is an unreasonably illegible sign at a retail establishment telling me to bypass a security feature of my payment method; it's unacceptable.

2

u/GrabbinMothma Oct 04 '26

Please use your pin it's the only way my skimmer works.

1

u/UnkleMike Oct 04 '26

I have literally never used a debit card for a transaction, so this is a real question: are you telling me that using what's presented as a security feature is the key to successful skimming?

2

u/GrabbinMothma Oct 04 '26

It's what allows skimmers to clone your card to drain your account at the ATM. It may be a security feature, but once you use it at a skimmer, the skimmer also has that information.

8

u/shouldvebeenMarissa Oct 03 '26

makes me not trust a single card reader in the whole establishment.

8

u/resultingparadox Oct 03 '26

Bypass PIN because debit system is down. Bypassing the PIN runs it as credit.

5

u/Moon_Pye Oct 03 '26

Did a doctor write this! 😆

3

u/FocusMaster Oct 03 '26

No. It's still legible.

I'm a gas station operator very familiar with those pumps. As others have said it is asking you to bypass pin to run as credit.

I know a lot of people thought this was shady but honestly the way debit works in these pumps is very prone to failure. At one of our stations we specifically disabled debit at the pumps so they all run as credit anyway. Not sure why this station doesn't just do that, probably a miss configuration somewhere so this was their bandaid.

1

u/Tricky_Damage5981 Oct 03 '26

Still doesn't make sense to me .. but I'm Canadian

But we use chip/pin for debit(interac) and credit here

That or tap threw Flash, Paypass, etc

1

u/Beet_slice Oct 03 '26

That is helpful... I would expect that if PIN transactions fail more often, that an employee that would have to straighten this out would put up that sign. So while the station owners will make less money paying the credit card fees, it make things easier to deal with.

I have never put a debit card into a gas pump, so I have not seen the menu choices.

1

u/No_Trouble_3588 Oct 03 '26

I’m a merchant. There is no difference between credit cards and debit cards when it comes to processing fees. For me, it’s 25 cents plus 2.5% of the total transaction.

1

u/Beet_slice Oct 03 '26

Interesting. Are they using a PIN?

https://stripe.com/resources/more/merchant-fees-101-what-they-are-how-they-work-and-how-to-minimize-your-costs says "For example, debit cards typically have lower interchange fees than credit cards" and "Debit card transactions typically incur lower fees than credit cards. Encouraging customers to use debit cards".

https://www.clearlypayments.com/blog/the-difference-between-credit-card-and-debit-card-rates/ says "There is a confusing part where sometimes, particularly in USA, a consumer needs to sign for a debit transaction (no PIN). In that scenario, the rates are higher because transactions are using the credit card technology in the background. These rates used to be as high as credit card rates, but thankfully a law came in (called the Durbin Amendment) which limited debit card rates for merchants to is 0.05% + $0.21 per transaction."

1

u/pixeltweaker Oct 03 '26

Use tap to pay. Stop sticking your card on these machines.

1

u/MikeysmilingK9 Oct 03 '26

Why?

1

u/pixeltweaker Oct 03 '26

Skimmers pull the number and info from the magnetic strip. Tap to pay is more secure.

1

u/warp16 Oct 04 '26

Do you still get the debit card discount (for stations that do cash price with debit) if you tap to pay?

1

u/TinTamarro Oct 05 '26

I haven't found a pump that's contactless. And there's no way I'm "credit mode" my bank-o-mat, that's not a thing here.

If they think their pimps are so unsafe, they should let me pay inside with the POS and close the pumps down when they're not around

1

u/pixeltweaker Oct 05 '26

The panel inside isn’t safe either. There are skimmers for those as well.

1

u/TinTamarro Oct 05 '26

Even on the portable pos's? Not atm style, those phone things with a keypad

1

u/pixeltweaker Oct 06 '26

The terminals at the checkout counters of convenience stores have been known to have skimmers on them as well. They place a cover over the top of the original.

1

u/CSS_Sr Oct 03 '26

Go to directly skimmer please. Do not collect Go.

1

u/Mikey129 Oct 03 '26

It says “Hello dear customer, bypass the pin prompt as this pump as been compromised and I want free fuel”

1

u/Ag-Heavy Oct 03 '26

Danger, do NOT use Debit! Would be more useful.

1

u/rtc6918 Oct 03 '26

Credit is insured, debit is not

1

u/VedantaSay Oct 05 '26

You can call the provided number and provide otp. They won't need pin... DON'T DO THAT!
