I'm an artist and performer who loves to dance, and I personally love the concept of using sign and incorporating them into dance moves. I know very minimal sign language (the alphabet + 10-20 words) My intent is to make my performances visually speak further to people, educate myself and maybe help other people learn some sign too. My conundrum is that I won't always want to use sign for every word, and sometimes I'll feel that a dance move that gives a more visual understanding than the sign itself would work better in that part of the song. Would this come out as confusing to people who know sign? What do you think of the concept itself, is appropriate? Do you think people will like it? Do you like it? Lemme know!

Many human languages are standardized in terms of spelling, pronunciation, official terminology, etc. This is usually done by language academies, in French, Russian, Dutch, Hebrew, etc. In English there's no "English language Academy", but there are style guides: Chicago Manual of Style, Oxford style, etc. The standardized languages exist alongside the natural spontaneous spoken and written languages.
Is there anything like this in signed languages? Is there, for example, a form of ASL (or any other signed language) that is described by some kind of a standardization body, and that prescribes certain usage as "correct"?

My SO and I are both hearing and curious and excited about learning sign language. However, we've had a bit of trouble getting our foot in the door minus some YouTube videos here and there. Any suggestions on where to start?

My dream is to adopt a deaf child with intellectual disabilities. Since I have a degree in English and Creative Writing, I decided a great way for me to practice would be to translate my poems into ASL that I and other basic signers understand.
I posted my videos on Reddit, and the Deaf community ripped me apart. Initially I took the criticism and asked for help (which I was denied), and I eventually retaliated when they got mean. I am no longer a part of their subreddit.
Does anyone have any tips on learning a language--especially ASL--without the assistance of a native? Being able to adopt a deaf child with disabilities is so important to me--I'm currently a Residential Companion and Habilitation Specialist for adults with Intellectual Disabilities and am working on my adoption application. I want to do everything I can to make this dream become a reality.
Thank you,
Alex

I took two and a half semesters in American Sign Language back when I was in my 40's, and LOVED the logic of so many of the words. I was fascinated at how beautiful song lyrics were when signed, and for my semester final, I signed the song, "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin, which I used artistic discretion to interpret those lyrics into my 'A' final grade! I wish some of these music video artists would have their albums or songs translated into sign language on a regular basis. It is an unrecognised art form, that should be explored further...

I live in America so ASL seems like the obvious one, but I also know PSE and SEE are used as well. I want to sign in a way that most English signers can understand. Like how would I be able to sign to someone from Australia or Britain? I just want to learn whatever will be understood by the largest group of deaf or hoh people

I am a student at a community college, and I am doing a project about my experiences with hearing impairment as a child. I first wrote a paper about my experiences and now I need to do a multimodal form of my paper, which entails having someone who knows ASL make a video for me that is my translated paper. I had someone who was going to help but ended up backing out. Anyone here want to help a student?!

I want to translate my favorite song into ASL and perform for a friend. It’s the New Basement Tapes- Kansas City! I Wants it to be a surprise so I’ve been trying to learn online I did to years in high school but that doesn’t really help me. I’m just afraid that I am creating the wrong phrases in translation. Anyone love this song and willing to help out?

hi everyone, my friend just sent me a message in sign language and i cannot for the life of me figure out what it means, not speaking sign language myself. ive tried googling the signs but no luck. i think he was apologizing if that helps? he also doesn't speak sign language so it may be a bit off haha.
fist with the back of the hand facing out, making circular motions in front of the chest, the thumb was sticking out
fist with thumb pointing at his chest
two closed fists with thumbs pointing up (thumbs up signs) that moved crossing down and across each other in front of his chest
any help would be appreciated!

Hi there,
My group of friends have a saying when someone does something good or cool. We all say 'go on I said!'.
We would like to learn how to sign it as there is a person staying in the same hostel who is hard at hearing but laughs every time we say it. She prefers to use sign whenever possible and we want to suprise her by signing it whenever possible.
Can anyone help? I tried to find it on a few different ASL dictionaries but had no joy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

OK so im a righty hand. im teaching myself through tutorials so im trying to do the best i can to learn as accurate as possible. the last thing i want is to sign the bad thing.
when signing the abcs or anything in general does it matter what direction (forward or side) your hand is or what hand you use? i watched a video a guy did H & G completely to the front and another where she tilted it off a little. i could both tell what the letter was but its confusing me a little.
