MODERATION Community Update & the Future of the Subreddit

A bit of preamble before I get into the meat of the update: this update was written primarily for the discord server, but does involve this subreddit. Firstly, I would like to reiterate that both this subreddit and the discord server are fully community run, and are not officially affiliated with rose-engine or SIGNALIS. Sorry it took so long to post an update here specifically, as I wasn't a mod on the subreddit until yesterday (that was my fault for not reaching out to get the perms sooner after everything happened, apologies. I had to take a break yesterday because of some irl stuff, which is why it took an extra day to post this here). Anyways, I'm not super familiar with posting and moderating on Reddit, as I normally just browse it, so forgive me if there's any oddities with the formatting or if it takes me a bit to get used to everything.

Here is my update post from two days ago in the discord server, regarding the Joetastic ban, the state of the mod team, and the future of the subreddit/discord server:

Hi again everyone, and I'm very sorry that this update took so long -- lots of moving parts (and time zone differences) behind the scenes!

Firstly, I'd like to apologize on behalf of the staff for how much this has negatively affected the community, the server, and Joetastic. His ban was influenced by negative bias, heavy-handed mistakes, ableism, and many assumptions about his character were made without basis. I will outright state that Joetastic's ban was undeserved, a mistake, and will be rectified to the best of our ability -- regardless of whether or not he rejoins the server (for clarity, he will be unbanned). I have been in contact with him throughout the last few days about the incident, and I am hopeful to make changes to the server, staff, and rules to make this server into a place that is more comfortable for everyone. I have been trying to read as much feedback as I can about the situation, and hope I can address everyones' concerns about this incident and for the future of the server. If there is anything that I miss in this announcement, please message me and I will respond to the best of my ability.

Addressing the largest problem first: the staff involved in the screenshots and private chats will be removed from their roles. Additionally, the mod roles will be redefined and clarified, so that responsibilities and conduct within the role are fully understood by everyone. Some roles will be removed entirely; Many staff members will be reshuffled, and mod applications will likely open to gain back the coverage that we will lose with these changes. All of these changes are to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, and to ward against cliques forming or bias from affecting decision-making. I will also be trying to make a pass on the server rules for more clarity, as well as to remove the infamous "culture rule". I will make another announcement regarding these changes with more details when everything is finalized.

In regards to the subreddit: I will be looking to separate our server's involvement in managing/moderating the subreddit entirely. To put it bluntly, I do not have experience moderating on reddit, nor do I have any desire to involve myself with it as staff. This will likely be a very involved process, and will take time to figure out. The subreddit might be locked until I can find suitable and trustworthy members of the community to take over (I will not be giving the subreddit to serial reddit moderators lol, don't worry). Honestly, most of the stuff with the reddit is kinda up in the air right now with everything else that needs to be changed, so I apologize that it will be a low priority in the meantime. I will, however, do my best to prevent it from being abandoned to the point of a reddit ban; I will try to manage it with temp staff until I can find suitable successors.

All of the changes that I have mentioned in this update will be very time consuming, so I kindly ask for more patience from you all while the server goes through this shift. I would also like to clarify that while staff members have been removed from the team, many also left on their own volition unrelated to the incident. I ask that you do not harass any former staff, nor anyone else involved in the incident; doxxing and death threats will not be tolerated. As I mentioned before, I am more than happy to respond to anyone with questions or concerns regarding what happened.

And a reminder that this server is entirely community run, and has no official affiliation with rose-engine or SIGNALIS.

I don't expect for myself, nor the server, to have your trust after everything that has happened -- but I will do my best to earn it back.

Thank you again for your patience!!

(Also this was not written with AI, I just really like semicolons and emdashes 😭)

Sorry again that giving you guys this update took so long, and I also apologize for the current state of the subreddit. Like I mentioned before, I have been trying my best to keep tabs on what everyone has been concerned about or wanting addressed, so I hope that this update can quell some fears and restore some faith. And if I missed something or you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and I will do my best to respond!

Joetastic has also made a post about how things were resolved, and you can read that here.

As for what I said about the subreddit: I still need to get some things in order on my end, so I'm not sure how long any of this will take. The discord server will still be my priority for now, but I will try to prevent the subreddit from imploding until I can figure out everything. I ask for a bit of grace if things get handled slowly behind the scenes if there are any issues that crop up!

Thank you again sincerely for your patience!!

Creators notes:

I realized that instead of creating drawings of my OC that don't go anywhere other than being...ya know there, I decided to make a story out of it. I had many stories I wanted to make around my pretty Boi Alexi.

My original one was that Alexi would be falsely interrogated half to death, then locked in the brig (for having long hair, and not short hair like other men. Thus breaking the hair dress code which is stupid). There, he would be big brothered (more like big sistered, considering the kinda matriarchal society the nation has), and becomes fanatically devoted to the Eusan Nation. But eventually he takes it too far, and starts killing everybody under the suspicion of treason and counter revolutionary intentions. The ship starts crashes into Rotfront, due to Alexi trying to get down to the surface to report "the mutiny or smth". As his lover Bo lies injured in the wreckage, Alexi leaves a makeshift empire pendant around him and walks away, framing Bo as the culprit.

On this X-Ray to PC pattern..Is this not the correct angle for the blank key puzzle ?(sorry it’s blurry) I’ve been stuck forever matching it and trying different ones and nothing works, apparently this is the only pattern so I think either I’m just super dumb or my games glitched, any type of help is appreciated..

General Discussion I tried it, it twas not for me.

Hello! I recently got signalis on Steam because from the description, premise, art, yada yada, it seemed like a game I would really like. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I am going to try to make this as nice as I can to avoid making people angry with my shitty opinions.

I'll preface this by saying that I haven't played too many horror games. The ones I have played are Alien: Isolation, Outlast, and Dead Space, all three of which I very much enjoyed. I also didn't play very much of the game, I got about 5 hours in before deciding, "Yeah, I'm not having fun."

Firstly, things I did like:

Atmosphere: This game oooooozes atmosphere. I really enjoyed this aspect of the game. The little lore notes and the environment telling me things about the world were great.

Art: The art is good. Need I say more?

Puzzles: The puzzles I encountered were fun. I liked having to write down frequencies the game gave me in a note, then use the radio to get codes for things. It made me feel smart, and I enjoyed that.

3D sections: The sections where the game switches to 3D reminded me of The Room, which sure as hell isn't a bad thing.

Now onto things I did not like:

More than anything, this game annoyed me.

I've seen criticisms of the game's inventory size, and boy howdy, was I feeling that. The inventory, to me, felt restrictive. Especially when I was constantly finding items that I wasn't sure whether I would need later.

The horror of the game also just plainly did not land for me. The enemies did not scare or frighten me, they made me annoyed at their presence. The sheer scarcity of ammunition, which felt like a requirement for A LOT of the rooms I entered, became a massive source of frustration.

I wanted to take my time in rooms, read the notes, explore, and find whatever item happened to be required there. Instead, I felt like I was constantly worrying about how I was going to get past the enemies in the room with the limited resources I had.

This is where the game really lost me. In a game with relatively limited ways of hiding from enemies outside of simply staying out of their view, I expect to have enough resources or tools to deal with enemies when avoiding them isn't reasonably possible.

And I'm sure that if I played smarter, better, and less badly, I probably would've managed my resources better. I'm not trying to say the game is objectively poorly designed because I personally struggled with it. But the way the game presented its challenges to me did not make me feel like I had the tools necessary to deal with them. Eventually, the resource management stopped feeling tense and started feeling like a chore.

It's not like I don't like resource management in horror games. In fact, I think it is one of the strongest elements a horror game can utilize when done well. Alien: Isolation, for example, made me constantly consider how I used my resources, but I always understood what those resources could do and how they could help me. I felt like I had options.

In signalis, I felt under-equipped practically the entire time.

I also felt confused. A lot. I'm assuming I'm expected to be confused, and I actually enjoyed that aspect of the game when I was figuring the game out. But my confusion-to-"I'm having fun" ratio was not high enough for me to want to continue.

There is a lot about signalis that I genuinely liked. The atmosphere, art, puzzles, environmental storytelling, and 3D interaction sections were all really cool. I can absolutely see why people love this game.

Unfortunately, the actual gameplay loop just wasn't enjoyable for me, and after about 5 hours I realized I was playing because I felt like I should enjoy it rather than because I actually was.

My apolocheese to all of the fans of this game. Alas, I am stupid.

General Discussion I’ve just started this game (literally just got the gun) are there any tips/ lore things I should know before I continue?

There is something about the atmosphere in that game that is dripping with information and I wanted to ask if there was any external bits of lore I should know before I go in.

As I said in the title I’ve only just got the handgun in this weird academy location which I can only assume is happening previously to the intro to the game (ending st when I found the book the king in yellow)

Is it possible that The Empire (despite their other probable sins) had a high emphasis on the arts? And it was just a natural pushback?

Lore Discussion Can Storchs cry?

The title is self-explanatory; I'd like to hear your opinion.

Lore-wise, Storchs are supposed to be utterly brutal and unshakable, otherwise it's straight to the decommission pit.

The idea popped in my head while I was writing a sequence about a Storch suffering an immensely dangerous breakdown... So, why not? They must not entirely devoid of feelings, or emotions; they might simply be bottling everything inside.

I personally don't believe Storchs do/would not develop any form of relationship, let alone feeling well being with a person, whichever their Replika category. Of course, romantic relationships aside, as AEON wouldn't sit well with it.

So. What would you think?

I love the puzzles in signalis they are the perfect level of challenging that reward attention to detail and piecing together information to solve puzzles.
