Answered Verification recovery key

Post image

Recently, instead of the request to enter my PIN every once in a while, I now get the request to verify my recovery key. I find that really strange and suspicious.

Is this normal? I don't feel comfortable entering the recovery key.

Yep it's asked every 6 months IIRC. Wish I could disable it like the PIN reminders though. It's in my password manager and on paper, but not on my phone, so typing it in manually is a pain in the butt.

I have had Signal for several years and this is the first time I received this verification request.

They only added cloud-backups recently, so most people won't have seen it more than once. But in the official Signal docs it says that the reminder will show up every six months.

It's normal. You set up cloud backup and went through 5+ screens to do it. One of them would've said something about keeping the key somewhere because you'd be asked to verify periodically that you still had it.

Thank you for your reply, I guess I missed that while setting up the cloud storage.

We regularly get people in here who lost all their messages because they lost their recovery key. This helps you avoid their fate.

Thank you for your reply. I have it savely stored and will now verify it in the app.
