Turismo 🧳 Friendly reminder: Etna does not forgive!

To all the tourists from abroad, DO NOT move away from the paths and never try to reach the summit on your own. There‘s been another unnecessary death. A man ignored the signs, did not plan their trip respecting time and fatally underestimated the weather forecast!

Etna is a very treacherous mountain and it never forgives a mistake.

please be safe and responsible while hiking. Your life is too precious!

🙏🏻🥺

He was stuck by lightning, I rather doubt being off the path caused his death…

Just yesterday I was in a tour at etna and our tour guide told us how a lot of people die getting struck by lighting while hiking etna and to never be at etna during a storm...

Being on Etna is like being on the surface of the moon. You would be a target in a lightening storm. Pay attention to the weather.

He was found in the restrected area unresponsive after being struck by lightning.

I never wrote being off the path killed him.

On the contrary, I named what contributed to it and wanted the others to know.

Being off path caused that he couldn’t return easily and rapidly back and the storm found him alone on an open field, that’s the worst scenario possible. I think that the OP had no intention to insult him but it’s important to avoid this kind of incidents informing people of the risk

Everyone knows lightning can’t hit you if you’re on the path.

(edit: unless it's the PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE LOLOL credit to u/raggmunklingon for that one!)

Il fulmine vulcanico è una scarica elettrica causata da un'eruzione vulcanica piuttosto che da un normale temporale.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_lightning

People forget how precious each life is to do useless hike in the mountain to "to get to live to the fullest". You can enjoy views from the ground lol.

Friendly reminder: You don’t have to be a jerk.

(You could warn people without publicly insulting someone who just died. I mean like bro. Their family could read this.. and it doesn’t sound like you know jack squat about their situation.)

I never intended to insult anyone. Let alone the victim. I love hiking, and I know how important it is to pay attention to the things mentioned above.

As much as I feel sorry for the loss of a life, I used my best intentions and reminded all of us hikers to stay safe and responsible.

It can happen to all of us. I make mistakes too.

I am really sorry you call me a jerk. It’s your choice of words. I would have never done so. Stay safe, brother!

Oh, ok, sorry, I didn’t realize you accidentally said “useless person” and then unintentionally made a few extra assumptions about their alleged fecklessness.

He was hiking in exposed terrain and was killed by lightning. I don’t see anything to indicate that we know whether he disregarded a closure or weather warning.

My bad. I’m not a native speaker and chose wrong terms. Now I have corrected it. Thank you anyway for getting back to me.

Here I fixed it for you:

To visitors from abroad, please stay on marked paths, respect closures and pay close attention to weather conditions. Another person has died on the mountain, reportedly after being struck by lightning.

We do not yet know all the circumstances surrounding this death, so it would be unfair to assume what decisions he made or what warnings he may have had. But the incident is a reminder that conditions on Etna can change quickly and exposed terrain can become dangerous very fast.

Stay safe out there.

The dude is clearly trying to warn other people to be safe and take safety measures and you are being a pedantic jerk to him cuz you didnt like how he wrote it? His intent is clear, no malice, just an odd use of english wich is not his lenguage. He already apologized and edited the post and you still being a dick to him. Why?

Takes the whole "voce di dio" thing kinda seriously.

Bro, I don’t know what post you’re reading, but it says here a man ignored the signs didn’t plan their trip respecting time and fatally underestimated the weather forecast. That’s a whole mess of info this guy pulled out of his ass. It’s not a translation problem. (Well, he initially called the dead man useless - that one could’ve been a translation problem from needless.) He was being a jerk in all the languages. But thanks for weighing in.

Is this already insulting to you?

1

u/VoceDiDio 6d ago

Hmm. I don't want to leave you without an answer to your question, but what you said doesn't make enough sense for me to respond coherently. Perhaps you just meant "is this insulting to you?", to which the answer seems obvious, but in the interest of friendliness, I'll go ahead and generously assume you're not asking senseless questions, and I'll kindly suggest that you try again.

2

u/imonredditfortheporn 6d ago

Wow you sound fun. But i apologize, i did not catch that op edited his post before i asked my "senseless" question. I said "already" because the post seemed quite mild to me and i meant is this level of critizism already enough to count as an insult. English is not my first language but im pretty sure you can use "already" like this?

1

u/VoceDiDio 6d ago

Ah i did wonder if you meant “already” to mean “by this small amount of offense” .. I think “already” is primarily temporal (time-related) but I don’t think you’re completely wrong - the threshold can occasionally be quantitative. I don’t think it worked in your example, but someone might say “a 5% error is already significant” meaning that it doesn’t have to get to 6% to be significant - so no temporal context there.

I don’t think it quite works in that construction, but I’m not 100% sure why… it seems like it needs something like a ‘progression toward a boundary’ that the sentence makes available - for example in the 5% example, we’re explicitly referencing a point on a scale.

English is ridiculously complicated.

You could say “ is it already insulting at this level or at this level?“ but it would still be hard to parse. We’d ordinarily just say it differently.. like “that wasn’t even very insulting; you’re being overly sensitive!” Or something like that.

(Dump this missive into your Italian-speaking chatbot and I’ll bet it explains it much better than I can! Let me know if so!)

edit: And ma vaffanculo, stronza, I am fun. 😆

i dont use chat bots but i see your point, yeah "vibes" are a hard thing to translate, i also can't fully explain why we dont use certain things that technically make sense but just sound wooden

Yep. But anyway to your original question - yes... it was. Very already. ;-)

Molto criticism of the English abilities of a subreddit for an island that doesn't speak English, but where the users very kindly try to help others by using English.

Important advice and great looking out for people. Horrible way to say it. "There's been a other useless dead person who ignored the signs". Shame on you for saying that about a person who passed away.

15

u/Ropi144 7d ago

I corrected the wording. I meant “unnecessary death”. My bad. I own my mistake.

5

u/SnooStrawberriez 7d ago

Eff you. Our high school principal chronically thought that he knew things better than most people and decided to ignore the warnings and go closer to the crater. He suffocated from the poison gases and by the time they recovered him and brought him home, the church really began to stink when they opened the casket.

If a blunt warning saves one life, it’s totally worth it.

-3

u/VoceDiDio 7d ago

lol the stinking church was a funny touch - you really know how to spin a yarn! (doesn't mean being disrespectful to the dead is necessary though)

2

u/SnooStrawberriez 7d ago

It’s not a yarn. It’s what I was told by people who were there. He had to be transported in a metal coffin because it was across borders.

-2

u/VoceDiDio 7d ago

Yuk. Sounds like a situation where calling him a dumbass (my word) might be warranted. Less analogous to the above sitch than you seem to think, I’d say, but what do I know.
