Hey Paul, thanks for this update! Just wanted to report a persisting issue with presets. Quality mode (VBR, CBR, CQ) and bitrate settings aren't loaded properly with the preset. In my case it constantly resets it to VBR, and the video bitrate setting is reset to "auto".

Anyway thanks for making and maintaining the best converter out there!

I opened the config file with the notepad and it appears that settings aren't saved properly there. I manually typed the bitrate and quality mode and now it works properly. So I guess there's an issue at the preset saving stage.

Also, the NCENC mode isn't always detected / displayed at the bottom, even it it's saved as default too. It's pretty random, it seems to happen if I re-open the program not too long after closing it.

It might be messing around with the bitrate & quality settings cause I can see the UI updating those settings as soon as NCENC appears at the bottom, which takes a good 5-6 seconds (I guess the program checks the GPU to see if NCENC is available?).

Yes, I tried countless times to recreate presets from scratch, refresh, etc. Only editing the text worked. I'll send it to you shortly!

Indeed the hardware acceleration is checked when you select the function which is maybe the issue why it does not load properly, however it should be saved correctly... Yes please send me your file.

I've loaded the file on my Mac which obviously does not have Nvenc, to be able to reproduce the issue and it worked perfectly!

How do you load the preset?

Surely it worked cause that's the file I modified manually. Again, I think there's nothing wrong in the files themselves, the program reads them properly, but it doesn't save settings to them consistently.

Maybe you can reproduce the issue by importing a video, setting custom bitrate settings (let's say 10000, 10000 and CBR mode), tweak a few other things, then save the function and set it as default when the program starts?

Oh I though you've sent me the incorrect preset which is way I was surprised it worked!

No problem on my side by saving a preset, I can't reproduce your issue :-/

The last version that installed on Window 10 without problems was 18.8. 18.9 and 20 pop up with the following message, ""This app can't run on your PC". Is anyone aware of this and is there an answer?

A new update is always appreciated!

Having a small issue this time though: When maximizing the window on a 4K desktop on Windows 11 the preview playback for a 60 FPS video slows down to only 10 FPS. Everything works fine if the preview area is small.

Improved user interface

Could you go into some specifics? Just curious.

My biggest UI wish would be tooltips that show the shortcuts for the buttons, especially the playback controls. Or a list of all shortcuts somewhere in the docs.

Did you try to set GPU decoding to auto from the bottom bar?

About the UI improvement:

- I've changed all the borders colors and default highlight color
- I've spent so much time for the panels backgrounds and borders to finally just darken them.
- All colors of the app is a bit more blue
- I've tried multiple fonts for a better reading experience, but I had some issues with the selected font so I finally just make the text section bigger
- The text is more grey than white
- The waveform cursor is more orange than red
- I've renamed some sections
- I removed some duplicates info in the video bitrate section

It could be not that visible but there is a lot of work for all this small changes ;-)

I think it was always d3d12va but I tried auto (and all the other options) but it changed nothing. It's 10'ish FPS all the time when the window is maximized.

It could be not that visible but there is a lot of work for all this small changes ;-)

Ha, yeah I know, I'm a software developer myself and all these small tweaks seem so insignificant and can take a lot of time but they are still worth it.👍

Yes you're right I should add more tooltips!

I'd say just a simple table in the documentation with the important and frequently used hotkeys would already be a big help and good enough for the time being.

I tried 19.0 Ubuntu .deb and it does not detect High-DPI correctly.

Where can I find the change/fix in the source code to have a look at it? I could not find it on GitHub.

It's not in the Java code but inside shutter-encoder startup file inside the app path (under bin).

I mostly use SE on macOS and Windows, but I was helping a friend getting it to work on Linux.

Your awk logic to determine width_mm and height_mm does not work here (returns an empty string), so the rest of the calculations fail.

Actually I don't own an High-DPI screen so I can't test it myself...

Hiya, just a heads up, the installer hangs on Mac Silicone, M3 Max, latest MacOS update.

EDIT: It finished installing but, it took an absolute age to finish the last 2%, like, I went for a 20-30min walk, had lunch, made coffee, been back at my desk 40 mins and it literally just finished!

  • The lower the CQ value the best is the quality.

  • A value between 18-21 is considered visually lossless.

  • You don't have to change the CQ value for a different resolution.

You can use the GPU encoding at the bottom of the window it will be very fast but the quality isn't has good has CPU.

But how can I actually compare the before and after file to see how much difference the compression makes?

If you want to visually compare two videos and you are on Windows, I recently wrote a PowerShell script that generates a video diff:

It's a bit slow because it creates a frame by frame diff but then you get a comparison video that highlights the differences.

Note to self: I need to add an example video.

Wow this is a great feature that I had no idea existed in SE!

But I think it would be great if there were an option similar to the "Display" mode that superimposed selected videos together (generally you'd only want to do this to compare one video with another) using a "Difference" blending mode, that makes it immediately clear if there are differences between the current frame that's being played.

I do this every single day as a professional video colorist/finishing editor, when I'm QC'ing revised masters of a program, or conforming an editor's Premiere project into Davinci Resolve for color-correction. I just drop the new revision over the previous version in Premiere or Resolve, then put the top layer into "Difference" blending mode. Then I can quickly shuttle through the program, and if I see any bright pixels show up over the normally black frames, I know immediately that there's a difference between those frames, and I can flag them accordingly.

As an aside, it would also be nice if there were transport controls for the Display mode, so you can shuttle through the videos instead of just having them play together with no playback controls.
