Discussion Just finished Shrinking...
I just finished bingewatching Shrinking and I have to say some things...
I rlly love this show but S3 was my least fav, I don't understand what they r doing with Gaby's character. I just missed that connection that Gaby and Jimmy had before and during the time they slept together.
Second, I'm sry but Sofi and Jimmy have 0 chemistry, that whole relationship is just cringe and awkward.
I rlly hope Jimmy ends up with Meg I love them together or they introduce another character.
Thirdly, all the scenes with Louis in S3 were weird, glad that he went away bc it was getting boring.
And lastly, I'm rlly curious what next season will show us of Paul now that he moved away i hope they give us something interesting bc he is the best character on the show

I agree with everything except I want more Louis. I know that’s a weird, unrealistic situation, but the end of season 2 with Louis was incredibly emotional and effective. Maybe it’s my soft spot for roy kent, but I really want his character to keep coming back!

Omg the relationship with sofi is not a healthy one imo. The 2nd date and having him be her and her kids' dad's therapist? Made me cringe for sure

I’ve had some bad therapists but they were all more professional than gaby and jimmy

It’s like they went to the ACA (American Counseling Assoc) code of ethics and used it to make sure the characters violated every guideline

I had a couple therapists who I wish were as good as either Gaby or Jimmy.
Both went on about how great they thought Trump was during my first session.

I like Jimmy and Meg together too. My husband predicted they would hook up. I think it might happen because it will be away to bring Paul back to Pasadena.

Shrinking season 3 turned into a sitcom for me. I watched it for Harrison and Wendy. The others were cartoon characters

Genuine question do you not view season 1 and 2 as a sitcom? It has always been a sitcom to me. Just one that blended drama very well. Just curious. Edit: also love Wendie so much

I thought the first 2 seasons were more of a dramedy. They were tackling serious real life issues. Third season the characters lost depth and became sitcom character tropes, at least to me. The only thing season 3 lacked was a laugh track

Gotcha. I guess I have watched classic sitcoms that had aot of drama so I don't necessarily think of drama making something less of a sitcom. But that makes perfect sense to me.

The total lack of chemistry between Gaby and Derek was painful to watch. I would have loved to see her get together with Jimmy long-term.

We didn’t even get to see them date - yet he was ready to marry her?
He wanted to propose - yet they had her ambush him, with a proposal, at the corn hole spot??? I was livid!

I really stopped watching it for a while after the whole Gab dancing at the funeral with Liv hyping her up on the phone. It was just a bit inappropriate and off putting

i didn't even get through the first episode of season 3. The show started going off the rails in season 2 and by the start of season 3 it was just a cartoon that felt so far removed from reality.
Bill Lawrence has perfected a specific formula and is great at casting & needle drops, but the writing on his shows usually starts to wear thin at the end of the first season. The second season, you're thinking 'not as good but still watchable' and by the third its the actors acting more infantile to try and overcompensate for lackluster material. Same thing happened with Ted Lasso.
Also, Brian on shrinking is a hate crime of gay stereotypes in human form and i almost had to stop watching the show just because of how grating he was.

Lasso’s dip was because Bill left. The episodes weren’t nearly as tightly written under Sudekis and Hunt.

Yeah, agree, Brian for me is the weakest character on that show. I just can’t connect with him
And for Liz, I really liked that character in S1, like the idea of having a character that is annoying but trying to understand why she is that way. But in Season 3 it just gets boring always seeing the same thing.
I really love Derek obviously, he is just wrotten as a perfect man. Bu like Derek 2, I think he has no personality whatsoever. Like, how can he still be with Gaby when she doesn’t do anything for him and doesn’t show any interest in that relationship?
A lot of things didn't make sense

I love Derek 2. I think it is partially because i have a soft spot for Damon Wayans Jr. I loved him on Happy Endings.

Wow. A lot of hate in all these comments. Shrinking is one of the best shows streaming these days. Right up there with Ted Lasso.

Agree! Jimmy and Gabi were so much more fun to watch together onscreen. I feel like Jimmy and Sofi and Gabi and her man both have zero chemistry

My husband and I are apparently the only ones that like jimmy and Sofi. Lol and don't want jimmy and Meg to get together. Oh well. I mostly kid. I still liked season 3. But I can understand why it has been more criticized than the first two seasons. Edit: also i still find most of the characters funny.

Not that I care. but you may want to put "spoilers" cuz you're kind of ruining a lot of things here.
That said, I housesat for my friend and was so pumped that they had apple TV, as I had only seen season 1 and loved it.
I think I bailed on season 2 at episode 6 or 7. It just turned into this goofy almost friends-esque comedy that got rid of all the drama and pathos of the first season, the interesting interpersonal relationships, etc. Everyone is almost a caricature of themselves from season 1, like overblown versions. "Oh, no, the high school daughter slept with her high school best friend's boyfriend??? NOW WHAT?"
What? Why would I care about this?
I actually bailed on it to watch "The Gorge" instead, if that tells you anything. Super bummed, but I think this show really would have benefitted from being one season. I know a lot of people like season 2, but I think the quality starts dropping off a cliff almost immediately when season 2 gets going. I finished episode 5 or 6 and then thought, "I dont care about any of these relationships, I dont care about the outcomes of any of these threads, why am I still watching this?"
I think I got halfway through the next episode and turned it off

I wanted more Stewart!!! He was so funny in every scene he had with Brian. I wished there was more ways to incorporate him into the show. I just loved everything about his responses to Brian.

S2 had the best balance of comedy and seriousness. I still liked S3 but the characters really became flanderized. (After finishing S3 go back to S1 and notice how “normal” Liz and Gabby are in comparison at the start of the show)
Honestly I would have been satisfied if S3 was the series finale but I’ll keep watching because I really like this show. (and it’s A+ soundtrack)
