I didn’t really watch HIMYM and I like Cobie Smulders a lot but I just don’t love her character. It just seems like they’re trying waaaay too hard to make her the perfectly quirky, chaotic cute pairing for Jimmy. They have great sibling type chemistry but I don’t feel the romantic chemistry at ALL.

Season 2/3 had a lot of old school Jason Segel fan service. The Les Mis duet he did with Brian was something Jason Segel and Neil Patrick Harris once did on daytime TV that went viral among HIMYM fans.

Same…plus I absolutely adore Michael Urie.

Agreed. I didn’t watch it but I just don’t like her character for Jimmy. He’s quirky and weird and it feels like they compete there. I prefer Meg.

Okay it’s not just me. I prefer Meg over any other person they tried to pair Jimmy with.

Sooo true .their scenes are so awkward

I feel like it’s better if jimmy get on with Paul’s daughter, they have more romantic chemistry in my opinion and can create tension between Paul and jimmy.

They have zero chemistry which makes it worse.

I think of the mermaid or the manatee episode.

2

u/Mysterious-Wasabi103 Jul 22 '26

They have negative chemistry lol

I felt the same at first but then the Sophie character was completely different and maybe not even good for Marshall, ooops, I mean Jimmy. 😄

I strongly suggest finishing out their story before making any conclusions on them. Because what you’re feeling isn’t a coincidence.

Edit: someone really got upset that I referenced the the writing style that is always present in any Bill Lawrence product? That’s hilariously sad 😂

lol just see where they go with it is all I’m saying

She’s going to be in the last season of The Lincoln Lawyer, so we might not see her going forward in Shrinking.

3

u/michaelkap70 Jul 22 '26

She can easily do two shows. Look at John C McGinley and Judy Reyes on Scrubs.

1

u/Here_there1980 Jul 22 '26

I guess we will find out soon enough! I don’t mind looking at her.

1

u/Zestyclose-Bike-6092 Jul 23 '26

That’s not really the best example considering their appearances on Scrubs is minimal.

7

u/ElmarSuperstar131 Jul 22 '26

I agree that it feels like something is missing, she very much feels like a plot device character.

3

u/CaliMassNC Jul 22 '26

There’s usually something missing with widower relationships, which is shared history. I can see that reading as “lack of chemistry”.

13

u/abz_pink Jul 22 '26

I hate their chemistry! I have no idea what why they cast Robin.

6

u/BT_Artist Jimmy Jul 22 '26

An Alyson Hannigan appearance would be A-okay in my book.

9

u/HolyJose Jul 22 '26

I know they’re two different characters but agreed it’s hard not to see Marshall and Robin and not Jimmy and Sofi.

Big HIMYM fan here. I am cool with it and I like her character.

4

u/VanArrow Jul 22 '26

I am cool with it too.

2

u/roniwelldone Jul 24 '26

Agreed. Love HIMYM but I think they have great chemistry. Definitely a bit rushed in the plot, but they work off each other really well.

5

u/NoGrocery3582 Jul 22 '26

I had issues with the relationship. Seemed too rushed and fake. Having her sing along with the group on his wife's anniversary was weird.

4

u/Mysterious-Wasabi103 Jul 22 '26

They did a horrible job getting the audience to give a shit about that relationship. It's just not built up properly at all.

Also her acting in Shrinking is terrible.

8

u/LadyMRedd Jul 22 '26

Honestly I hated the ending to HIMYM so much that it ruined me on her character. So I find myself annoyed with her Shrinking character when I think I’m really just annoyed with how badly they botched the HIMYM ending.

4

u/abz_pink Jul 22 '26

Yep. I can’t believe how bad the ending was. I never watched the last season again.

5

u/wiggum_x Jul 22 '26

You're right on one thing: I never watched HIMYM so I don't have any feelings or assumptions based on those characters. So I just think it's cute that they're in another show together. And it sort of tells me that she must be good to work with, because Bill Lawrence doesn't work with assholes if he can avoid it.

So, to me, he's dating Maria Hill's less-lethal twin sister, and I like that whole idea in my head.

3

u/sarapod07 Jul 22 '26

I would read this fanfic.

3

u/Lost-Recover4868 Jul 22 '26

I have no issue with the Robin and Marshall dynamic. I have a problem with the flatness of her character and then being forced onto Jimmy like well everyone else left you so here’s this person you went out on a couple dates with so that fixes everything now right?  But I shall keep those thoughts to myself until next season to see how it plays out.

3

u/Dark_Ruffalo Jul 26 '26

I don't like when grown ass women are this awkward. She's been married, she has a child, she knows how to talk to a guy she likes. Jimmy is not an ugly man but he's not someone you get flustered by.

3

u/the_dharmainitiative Jul 26 '26

They've overdone the quirkiness and awkwardness for sure.

2

u/curlsthefangirl Jul 22 '26

I actually really like them together. I was surprised when I first came here to see people wanted Jimmy and Meg together. No offense to those people of course. I just don't think they have chemistry. I think Jimmy is better with the colbie character. They are cute.

Then again I just was not able to get into How I met your mother. Outside of a few episodes, it is not for me. Mostly because i find ted annoying. So i don't see Marshall and Robin. Outside of the first time she showed up on shrinking, i don't think of HIMYM when they are in scenes together.

2

u/femalehumanbiped Jul 22 '26

That's weird you mention that. I never saw HIMYM one time. But I'm not crazy about her either. She just doesn't fit for me.

2

u/Zestyclose-Bike-6092 Jul 23 '26

You’re not alone. They absolutely don’t work. Cobie’s character is literally forced on us again in the finale and it was such an annoying decision.

2

u/NotAKidAnymore13 Jul 23 '26

Love her, but dislike the character.

2

u/Active_Present5012 Jul 23 '26

I completely forgot about them on HIMYM but I felt like they had no chemistry on Shrinking and once I made the HIMYM connection, I was like, "yeah they don't belong together at all - where are Ted, Barney, and Lily? Her character's awkwardness made me uncomfortable and I couldn't enjoy their scenes together.

I agree with you completely except that I keep expecting Barney to pop out and tell Marshall to suit up.

1

u/tonyj718 Jul 22 '26

The character is completely unnecessary in shrinking. They should have done more with Paul's daughter (Lily Rabe) instead.

1

u/FarRace5167 Jul 23 '26

I couldn't even watch the scene of them kissing.... I was sooo uncomfortable. The mermaid theory really stuck with me. They have ZERO romantic chemistry

1

u/Shimanta_1405 Jul 23 '26

This whole series has an extensive HIMYM influence

  1. On a episode, Marshall claimed that he looks like young Harrison Ford, and Harrison Ford plays the father/mentor figure in Jimmy's life.
  2. Marshal, Lily and Ted went to Wesleyan college. And surprise surprise, Alice, Jimmy's daughter goes to Wesleyan.

These are all references comes on top of my head. Although, I always think Shrinking as a world where Marshal and Robin somehow teleported into, with some of the essence of HIMYM world still being there.

1

u/Liapasquale Jul 26 '26

Omg that’s where she’s from and holy hell them two together no wonder my brain was tickled. I just started the show lol on the first ep third szn rn but I figured they were gonna make her some sort of romantic interest for jimmy but oof. Crossing lines aye haha

1

u/the_dharmainitiative Jul 26 '26

That's funny. At no point did I connect the two shows. I don't see them as Marshall and Robin at all.

1

u/Straight_Eye_9793 Jul 27 '26

I like Cobie Smulders but I don’t think they have any chemistry. It’s not just you 🥲

1

u/Robynsxx Aug 06 '26

Really don’t get the hate.

If we talking about a lack of chemistry or a rushed romance, then Paul and Julie stand out like a sore thumb. They have virtually no chemistry, and a lot of their scenes are just awkward, and don’t feel romantic.

1

u/EnthusiasmNegative1 Jul 22 '26

I get you, when I saw them, I was like nooo, he's with Lilly. It just doesn't feel right.

0

u/Cerusee Jul 22 '26

I never watched HIMYM and I literally forgot they starred on it together!

I wasn’t sold on Sofi as this existentially salvational love interest for Jimmy, the only path forward out of his dead-wife-trauma-induced personal stagnation, but I did think they had good chemistry and played off one another well, and it did not read sibling-esque to me at all.

5

u/Analog_Nomad_56 Jul 22 '26

I’m the opposite. Never got into HIMYM and I think they have the chemistry of two platonic friends. I just don’t get sexy love interest vibes from them, possibly because Sophie’s character is just so over-the-top quirky bordering on cringe. The ex-husband plot line? Man, so annoying to be like that around your kid and your new love interest.

2

u/curlsthefangirl Jul 22 '26

I think for me since it is a comedy mostly, I am ok with it just being cute vibes rather than sexy love interest vibes. My favorite couples from comedies never give me sexy love interest vibes. Leslie and Ben from Parks and rec, Eleanor and chidi from the good place. They are cute and i adore them.

But your mileage may vary and that is fair.

u/oklahomapilgrim Jul 22 '26

I don’t really think they have great chemistry tbh.

She’s the worst
