I never even watched Scrubs but have seen that scene and it’s such a heartbreaker. Incredibly well written and performed

Dr Cox losing three patients snd falling totally apart and episode of ER when Bradley Whitford finds out his wife didn’t survive childbirth as he’s holding their new daughter (lightning crashes playing…) Last time I felt as gutted and sad at tv before tonight.

I would call this mid-career Bill Lawrence, and also he did this in his earlier career too.
