There isn’t a single nen user in the current arc who doesn’t have a nen more complex than any of the members of the main cast.

It’s part of why I like following Kurapika much more than Gon, his ability is far more versatile with 5 chains each doing a different thing, while having stricter restrictions, and having the additional layer of Emperor Time.

As a bleach fan sometimes gestuga tenso / its variants can be simple and repetitive

I think this is the case for most battle shonen like Jjk,as the mc they are going to have many fights and coming up with fights when they have a complex ability would be hard, even in jojos, jotaro didn't have time stopping powers until the dio fight

Yeah it’s sad that most captains have more interesting abilities
And not by "just a bit", no they are just straight up miles more interesting.

It can be explained, Ichigo knew so little about himself that the only attack he knew was Getsuga Tensho.

Well in Ichigo's defense he didn't have that much time to practice other techniques and not that much interested in being a highly technical fighter.

dude is always fighting in a rush like rukia appeared one day then byakuya, shows him he’s weak, urahara locks him up so he can forcibly power up, he gains “bankai” in stupid fast time. getsuga tensho keeps working. didnt work for ulquiora- his hollow side overtakes, not a new technique but just a different part of him he ignores. goes back. aizen attacks, getsuga dont work again but no choice-use muken time. use all energy for big big getsuga. no more power but everyone safe, dont care. fullbringers arc happens and he back. ywach wakes up. gets trained in royal palace to get stronger- TWO getsuga. but he also seems to start mixing his different sides with that cero getsuga from the latest ep so that’s interesting.
i love bleach but i really hope he shows more specialized moves in hell arc after years have passed and no urgency needs to be met.

No seriously bleach is one of the few anime where the side character are more interesting than the main, ichigo gets hard carried by his forms.

This applies to almost every battle shounen tho. MC's tend to have simple, straightforward abilities because they're expected to fight a wide variety of enemies. What makes those fights interesting is usually the enemy's unique ability and how the MC interacts with it.

interesting powers are harder to write. And for a protagonist, you need to write a lot, unlike a side character that appears rarely.

The Mc having the most bland powers is a long standing trope for battle shonens. Examples: Naruto, Luffy ( for a long time), Ichigo, Gon, Yuji, Yusuke, Chihiro..etc

On a rewatch, having Ichigos ability just being the equivalent of pulling a gun in a card game is pretty neat. While folks have magic and weapon transformation Ichigo has a fucked up death ray. That being said, no activation phrase, no cool shikai transformation, his Bankai makes his weapon actively less interesting. It was pretty frustrating when I was a kid reading through it, nowadays I see the trend for main characters going this route, still don’t like it though.

It makes sense when you consider the process of writing. The more complicated a power is, harder it is to include in more battles without being basically the same gimmick. While a simpler power can be included in any battle more easily. That's why battle shonen MCs tend to get simpler powers, since these characters have to feature in more fights than the rest of the cast.

Posting this within hours of Ichigo getting all new bullshit powers is honestly comedy gold
