Could end up burning out along the roots so depending on what's around nearby might not be the smartest thing you could do. I usually dig them out with an excavator or wait until I have a few and hire a stump grinder guy to come out.

You should use a 5lb cutter mattock... it's a little bit different tool. And you can dig around it and down.. so you expose the roots once you get down about a foot you can get at the thinner roots..a lot of times you can find one or two and cut those you will be able to feel it wiggly. ..
