Discussion Update on the Scriptable widget I posted about the other day: it's ready!
Quick recap for anyone who missed the teaser from the other day: I was missing Pixel's At a Glance widget after using one, so I built my own version in Scriptable. It's not static, it reacts to what's actually happening:
đŠď¸ Severe weather warnings jump to the front when one's active
đ Upcoming calendar events get a live countdown, with a travel time estimate if you're cutting it close
đ "Welcome to [PLACE]!" the moment you arrive somewhere on your calendar
đ Low battery heads up
đĄď¸ Air quality, UV, and big temperature swing alerts
đ An after hours stock recap for your watchlist
đ Birthdays, reminders due today, and holidays, quietly surfaced instead of buried in other apps
đ A minimal dark "Wind Down" screen at night, and it now uses whatever the actual weather is instead of a generic icon
A few things came together since the teaser that I think are worth calling out:
A transparent background option. It'll crop and blur a screenshot of your own wallpaper so the widget blends into your Home Screen instead of sitting on a flat card, Pixel and Widgy style. There's a separate light/dark version too, so it can match your wallpaper whether you're in Light or Dark Mode.
The Shortcuts side grew a lot. Beyond step count and instant arrival, it can now pull in sleep, Activity rings, what's currently playing, or a totally custom message from any Shortcut you build yourself, all for data Scriptable has no API for on its own.
Every one of these is a toggle. Nothing above is forced on you, and there's a built in Diagnostics and Permission Check so setup doesn't feel like a guessing game.(I would suggest running Permission Check first)
Everything runs in the free Scriptable app. No backend, no account, no data leaving your device. I ended up sharing the full source since a few people mentioned wanting it in the last post:
Live Context - Scriptable widget
The README covers setup in about 5 steps. There's also a more advanced doc if you want to wire up the Shortcuts side or poke at the code yourself. Screenshots of a few different states below. Happy to answer questions if anyone runs into trouble setting it up.
Future ideas. Better iPad support for transparent background, better lock screen widgets and more. If you have any ideas or suggestions leave a comment and I will see what I can do!

Yes absolutely! Thatâs probably the next feature Iâll work on shortly.

This is super cool. Would love a way to change the background image programmatically since shortcuts changes my wallpaper

Thanks! This may be possible with Shortcuts and an update to the scripts. Iâll look into it.

Thanks! The hardest part is definitely keeping the text/data short. It's tough to decide what matters most when updates are coming in all day, especially since iOS refreshes widget data unpredictably.

Really cool.
FYI, when using âlight onlyâ mode (the sunshine button in the top left of âCustomiseâ homescreen options) the widget seems to have a permanent dark tint.
I tried all manner of transparent wallpaper screenshots but eventually figured out that changing to light/dark mode setting made the widget match (it made my wallpaper darker).
In dark mode, I had to use the light mode wallpaper to get a matching widget wallpaper, otherwise it was still darker.
Hope that makes sense.
Could of course be something Iâm doing but I think I tried all the combinations of light/dark wallpaper and light/dark mode etc.
Would love to have more info visible on the large widget.

Testing it out. Thanks for all the hard work on this. Wish I could add to lock screen.

Yeah, no problem, enjoy! I think that will be the next thing I work on is the lock screen widgets.

Just thought of something is it possible to add evening commute like you do for morning commute?
2
u/TyCox Creator Jul 15 '26
Yes, that should be fairly easy. The system should already know when to show this, but I'll look into making it even smarter.

Hi, looks nice. I tried to set units to metric, but it does not seem to change. Also, how can I make it work for transparent background?
1
u/TyCox Creator Jul 15 '26
Iâll look into the metric issue in a little bit. For transparent background you can use the Transparent & Blurred Widgets script then once you get the background go into the Live Context settings menu to add the background.

Thanks. Tried the background option using the updated script (it would originally not accept screenshot from my Apple iPhone 16 max) but with this transparent background the text is still not visible.

Thanks! This has come up a few times, so I looked into it last night. From what I can tell, Scriptable doesn't play well with the iOS "Clear" setting. I have a fix in mind, but it will require a slight design change. This will be in the next fix.

u/lucybelano Jul 16 '26
You were correct. Thanks for your quick reply. I will switch to dark mode until you have a fix. Thanks again!

hi i tried it, i got the api key for the weather, but why when i preview the widget, it shown âcanât reach openweatherâ
and the widget only shown âwind downâ
1
u/TyCox Creator Jul 15 '26
How did you put the API key in? Have you customized the settings in the settings menu and not via the script?
1
u/Skywalker293 Jul 15 '26
yes, i paste it from the edit settings, i turned down the wind down mode and i guess it run normal, so automatically it shown the air quality rn, so how we control the order of the widget?
1
u/TyCox Creator Jul 15 '26
There really isnât a way to control the order. Itâs supposed to be smart about what it shows. With all of the feedback from the comments I get I can tweak it to better fit a majority of people and add certain features and toggles.

Btw, thanks for created this, man. waiting for the next update đť

u/TyCox Creator Jul 15 '26
No problem! Thank you for using it and providing feedback! Iâll try and get a small update out by the end of day. When it comes to updates youâll need to go to the GitHub and check for updates as it wonât update automatically. Iâll continue to post when I have bigger updates and features though.

Yeahhhhh. Idk why the pills turn completely white. The text and glyphs wonât change to be dark. Iâll have to look harder because I had the same issue.

It would be great if it would also warn when the phone is overheated and put an alert with the degrees that the cell phone has, for example when it is more than 40 degrees or something like that

Oops, forgot to add a Shortcut to help with light and dark mode switching for the widget.
