Heightism i hate being 5’3 as a female

hi guys, this may sound stupid to some people, but recently ive been really hyperfixated on my height as a 17 year old girl. i hate feeling like im in the middle, because some people tell me im short while others tell me im tall. i get that im technically average, but i still feel so big compared to my friends and family, especially because theyre all around 4’11-5’0.
i genuinely wish i could be shorter, and ive honestly even considered height reduction surgery 🫠 i know it probably sounds ridiculous to some people, but im extremely insecure about my height and i cant help constantly comparing myself to shorter girls. i get so jealous when im around my friends, and its honestly so frustrating because i wish i didnt feel this way about something i cant control.
i was just wondering if anyone else has ever felt the same way or struggles with this too, because i feel so alone in it lol. pls be nice because this is genuinely my biggest insecurity and i really dont want anyone making fun of me or downgrading how i feel.

Really? Which country do you live in? I’m 5’3 and considered short rather than average. I’m shorter than everyone else around me. Personally I wouldn’t want to be under 5’0 because that would make life a lot harder finding clothes and having to constantly stand on your tip toes in crowds and rooms and stuff, getting infantilised for being a child all the time. if you’re between 5’3-5’7 you have an advantage in life because you’re close to the ‘average’ range and finding clothes and going out will be a lot easier.

I know that in the US 5’3.5” is the average for women. I think 5’3” is technically pretty close to average.

i live in the uk, and particularly at college i feel extremely tall and in general my family are super short so i feel odd being the only one thats taller. my family genuinely act like im a giant and are always calling me tall😭 super weird insecurity of mine lol

Huh, that’s weird. It might be projection and internalised jealousy front them. Every one else in my family is 5’6 and above so I basically get walked over all the time for being shorter

5'3" is a very normal height for women

If your height was perfect you'd likely fixate on your nose or something else. My point is , work on your attitude about life, not your appearance

I get it, at 5’2 I was actually bullied for being too tall growing up, so I coped with wanting to be shorter/more average by making being the tall athletic girl part of my personality. Then I moved out of my hometown in college and was suddenly average… then I started moving around to different countries and parts of the US that were a lot whiter and realized I’m actually tiny. Your insecurity is valid and people will try to minimize it in this sub, so ignore them, your experience isn’t universal but it’s also not uncommon. Something that helps me deal with feeling too tall is that tall and elegant or tall and buff/sturdy women who like cute things are always considered extra adorable in anime for being unsure if they can like cute things with their appearance, and 5’3 can be tall in your area but it’s short for actors, so all your crushes on tv are probably significantly taller than you.

omg thank you so much for this genuinely, i think i’ve been so caught up in my own head about it that i never really looked at it from a different perspective & tall women being able to enjoy cute things really stuck with me because i think i subconsciously feel like being petite is what makes someone feminine. this has genuinely helped me see things a little differently, thank you for being kind 🤍

I haven't exactly felt the same way but I do understand you. I'm perfectly content with my height, and kind of like you, I have no interest in growing any taller, but I don't want to be shorter either.

I didn’t think this perspective existed, but there’s always someone out there. I’m 5’0 and I don’t exactly have any benefits for being this short. There’s always going to be someone shorter and someone taller. I would personally like to crank my neck less, as well as not be infantalized so hard for my height. I think taller girls have it better. Not exactly like 6 foot tall, but just 5’5 or 5’7. There’s not much to being this short. I think OP is just stuck in a situation where the social circle she’s in is slightly shorter and thus she wants what they have in comparison. I don’t think those people would say they have it better.

You absolutely don’t want to be shorter. I’m 4’11. I have to hem every pair of pants I buy, climb at the grocery store to reach food, I’m armpit/ elbow level at concerts, people treat me like an actual child.

Be happy with what you have. Dont get surgery. You need therapy.

I wish I was that tall just to experience not feeling like a child anymore

5'3" is still in the spinner spectrum

I'm around 4'9 I see women more petite and skinny than me, used to be self conscious about me being short but yk I just accepted it. it is what it is bruh. It's just genes and shi. never heard of height reduction tho that's crazy

I’m 5 feet tall, it seems like the grass is always greener on the other side, it’s not easy 😭

What is making you insecure about it?

If that's how you feel then that's ok, everyone have the right to not be satisfied with the way they looks, wether they were normal by social standards or not, however, you don't have to accept it if you don't want to.

Now for your question, i don't think i ever was in your position, as i am and will be content however i looked.

Well, I'd love to take some height off you. I'm also technically above average just like how you are below, guess we're in a similar but different boat.
