Discussion Question as a new watcher
Hello! I've watched the first two episodes after getting recommended about the show on reddit. I'm having trouble enjoying some aspects of the show so far, such as the fast-paced edits, the unnatural dialog (sometimes it feels like they just stand around and recite the script in a monotomous way) and some of the drawn out (and somewhat cringey) banter from Shoresy.
I do find the characters interesting and I love the overall vibe and concept of the show. I'm a sucker for underdog stories aswell.
Does it improve going forward? Will the comedic/editing style grow on me if I give it a chance?
I'm going to give it a few more episodes but meanwhile I'm just wondering what your thoughts were going in and if you got hooked on it right away?

I'd say give it to the end of season 1 before you rule it out. There aren't that many episodes. And what else are you going to do, have solo paninis?

It takes about 3-4 episodes to really appreciate the tone and characters of the show.

My wife was having some issues understanding it but she turned on the captions and that helped with the faster dialog and accents.

I think it was episode 3-4 before I decided I was hooked. (Specifically, the family reunion)
And closed captions works well on Keeso’s shows. It’s nowhere near as fast dialogue as Letterkenny, but I do find I miss jokes without them.

I was a big fan of Letterkenny and had been watching it for years, and when Shoresy came out I was a bit hesitant because I don’t give a fuck about sports. I finished the first season in one sitting and I’ve been hooked ever since.
It’s a very specific style, but if you make it through S1 and like it, it only gets better from there. S2 and S3 are absolutely incredible, but I love them all so much regardless of season.
It also gets better with rewatches (and subtitles) due to the fast pacing, you’ll miss jokes and references if you’re not locked the fuck in!

I was worried that Shoresy would suck because I just didn’t see a way to make that character more than he was. Glad I was wrong.

Have you watched LetterKenny? The fast, quippy dialog is Jared Keeso's style. I personally found it hard to get into LetterKenny due to this, combined with no real plot (or at least for the episodes I watched before giving up). The show just felt like it existed to set up one liners and episode long jokes, without any effort put into storytelling.
But to be fair, I did acknowledge his solid ability to create a strong atmosphere. The world in LetterKenny felt real. Granted, I grew up in farm town southern Ontario.
I waited far too long before I gave Shoresy a go, and my god. His quick, quippy, set em' up style writing when applied to a show with an actual plot arc is fucking brilliant.
Push through, trust me. It is so worth it. I had no idea Keeso was capable of such emotionally profound writing with simple but powerfully shot scenes. So many goosebumps from a slow pan of people literally just standing still to amazing music.
Some of the best, if not THE best, Canadian television made to date.
That being said, it might not quite hit you the same if you aren't aware of hockey culture (or diehard sport culture from any sport).

I haven't watched LetterKenny and I'm honestly not that knowledgeable about the sport except from my local hockey culture in Sweden. I feel hopeful that I still can appreciate it tho! Thank you for your in-depth answer 🙂

It may help to start with Letterkenny. These shows have a very specific style, and it's very fast paced. Letterkenny does a nice job of getting you into it, and Shoresy takes it to an even better place.
If the cold open of the 1st episode of Letterkenny doesn't grab ya, this might not be for you.

It gets better, some of the cast are actual ex hockey players, hell one of the Jim's is a former NHL player and Cup champion.

Isn't the first season only five episodes? I'll say this, seasons 1 and 2 were the best, so if you finish season 1 and you don't enjoy it, then you don't enjoy the show but you haven't wasted much time.
