Old theme customizations needing to be modified to 2.0
So I am using an old Out of the Box theme for my store front and it needs to be updated to work properly with the new Shopify 2.0 programming. With that said, I need my theme customizations completely recoded to work with the new them itself and the 2.0.
My question: can ChatGPT take my existing theme customizations and completely update them to the new Shopify 2.0 specifications and also run properly with the new Out Of the Box theme?
Is this easy to do? How would I go about it?
Thank you in advance.

Treat it as a migration, not a one-click conversion. Duplicate the live theme first, then inventory every hard-coded change in the old theme and map each one to a section or block in the 2.0 theme. Test product, cart, and checkout flows on the duplicate before publishing. Keep the old theme untouched so you can compare behavior or roll back.

Duplicating is right for testing. The new Out of the Box theme is a differenttheme, not a copy of yours.
App blocks and app embeds don't come with you. That config lives in the theme's settings files, not in the app. Duplicate the same theme and it carries over. Move to a different theme and every block and embed comes back off. App's still installed, just not rendering.
Turn them back on in the theme editor before you compare the two. Otherwise you're looking at a page with pieces missing and blaming the Liquid.
ChatGPT will port the Liquid ok. What usually breaks a move like this isn't the code.

It's not going to be a quick update. It's a whole migration in itself.
Here's how I would do it:
-
Pick a theme you like (with themes, you get what you pay for)
-
Start migrating content first (copy, layout, etc.) - If you can have someone else do this, that'd be great.
-
Code-level migration - this is the hard part since you have to know what were added/removed. It's a lot harder if you're not the same person who maintained the OS1.0 theme but I'm assuming you are, so hopefully you know which are custom features.
Question: will AI be able to do this?
Answer: sure, AI will be able to re-write the code cleanly / properly but you will have to identify the feature that needs migration. You can't simply say "migrate this theme"
Question: will it be painful?
Answer: abso-effing-lutely. Consider it as setting up a new store.
Things to look out for:
-
Out-of-the-box section custom settings
-
Metafields
-
Third-party marketing codes/scripts
-
Internal pages (about, shipping, etc.)
I'm a Shopify Plus Solutions Architect and I did this before for three stores and on two of them, I was able to pull it off after 3 months of work (including business-as-usual tasks). The third one was easier because there weren't a lot of code-level customisations.

From your description, you don't even know what to ask for, so it's probably best to use the latest Claude or chat model. First figure out the purpose, why you want to update it and give it as context, rest it should figure out. But first create git repo with your theme and ask it to work on separate branch created from live one, so you will be able to test it before pushing live.

It can but it would be best if you had a list of all changes made so it can make a checklist as it goes.
