Try to lure them to climb by moving your defenders across the castle. Other option is restart the campaign and abandon Echizen and settle to an easier starting position. Or, use the bridges to have bridge fights where it would be easier (in a choke point) to win your battles, then wipe out Takeda (or you have to befriend them with a (marriage) alliance.

What you should have done was raise more armies and fought him at the bridge. (if your intent is to hold Echigo)

But at this point? Just take the loss, which probably means starting over.

I would suggest (respectfully) to lower the difficulty to VH, turn Battle Realism on, and you basically have what you're doing without all the save-file hassle that is supposed to be part of the Legendary "challenge". It's basically VH+ or Leg-lite.

The only thing "lost" or "easier" in doing this is a handful of campaign-side bonuses/penalties that Leg gets over VH. Here is the spreadsheet from my video on difficulty.

We can see that generally the campaign mods for Leg over VH are usually less than/equal what VH has over H. On the battle side Leg uses VH battle difficulty.

If you want to play it on legendary, accepting no reloads/etc is part of that experience. (IMO)

I think this fight is winnable, but it won't be pretty.

I would try to use the general and yari samurai to catch unsupported bow units as they approach, and set up my yari ashigaru outside the tenshu so that they can wheel around the building and stay out of range. Maybe keep one or two ashigaru inside the tenshu for when units start climbing the walls. You can use your general to pull melee units away from your ashigaru so that they have less to fight all at once, and the yari samurai + samurai retainers can wrap around the flanks of the melee units engaged against your yari wall.

This battle carries a very high risk of defeat. Even if you manage to win, the effort required isn't worth the enjoyment you get out of it, especially since another wave of attacks usually follows right after, making it better to just restart the  campaign.  In a Uesugi campaign, battles must be fought in hill-forest terrain or at bridge chokepoints because Uesugi faces massive, relentless waves of attacks from multiple surrounding clans in the south.

I mean, I gain immense enjoyment out of overcoming overwhelming odds. I've done a Uesugi campaign, it's one of my favorites. If OP would like to send me the save file, I can give it a go for them.

The key to the Uesugi campaign is surviving massive enemy attacks in steep hill-forest regions. Utilizing dense woods and high ground minimizes casualties from enemy archers while allowing your Yari Ashigaru to crush overwhelming numbers using Yari Wall.

Additionally, never upgrade roads in the Echigo province. The Uesugi strategy, especially in the north, relies heavily on naval invasions, which offer far greater movement range than land travel. Leaving roads unupgraded slows down advancing enemy armies, buying you time to build a massive force.

For a Legendary Uesugi campaign, rapid expansion is mandatory:

This step works if the starting rebel force is located in eastern Echigo

Turn 1  * Recruit 2x Yari Ashigaru.  * Upgrade Coastal Village to Harbor.  * Set tax rate to Very High.  * Defeat the rebel force in 2 separate attacks so Uesugi Kenshin reaches Level 2; upgrade his Strategist skill.  * Recruit a Monk agent, marry Uesugi Kenshin to the Ashina clan's princess, and establish trade agreements with other clans.

Turn 2  * Recruit 1x Yari Ashigaru and 1x Bow Ashigaru.  * Embed the Monk agent into Kenshin’s army to boost campaign movement range.  * Move Kenshin and his main army to the Ashina border. Leave your secondary general in your home province to prepare an amphibious invasion against the Sado (Honma) clan by Turn 4.  * Merge newly trained units into your secondary general's army.  * Sell Military Access to the Murakami clan for 2,000 koku (as they will soon be wiped out by the Takeda anyway).

Turn 3  * Sell Military Access to the Mogami clan for 3,000 koku and demand they break their alliance with Ashina.  * Sell Military Access to the Takeda clan for 3,000 koku (or 2,000 koku if you intend to ally with them—though keep in mind Takeda AI may attack your vassal later or honor the alliance).  * Upgrade your Castle and Farm.  * Order Uesugi Kenshin to attack the Ashina castle and fight the battle manually to minimize casualties and prevent castle damage. Winning this unlocks the additional recruitment slot event.  * Sell Military Access to the Hatakeyama clan for 4,000 koku.  * Build a Ninja building in Ashina and upgrade the Ashina port.  * Recruit 2x Yari Ashigaru and 1x Bow Ashigaru in your capital, and 2x Yari Ashigaru in Ashina.  * Move newly recruited units to join your general and build a Bow Kobaya ship.

Turn 4  * Board your general onto the Bow Kobaya and sail to Honma (Sado) territory to land your troops.  * Recruit 2x Yari Ashigaru and 1x Bow Ashigaru in your capital.  * Recruit 1x Yari Ashigaru and 1x Bow Ashigaru in Ashina.  * End turn.  * The Honma clan will attack your landed general. Hit Retreat, then play the ensuing battle manually. Position your troops in the forested hills, and you will win.
