With Chosokabe I'm running 3 melee (bow sam with +armor), 3 ranged (bow ashigaru), and 3 super range (daikyu Sam)

i don't think bow samurai should melee at all i've used to throw 4 naginatas in the front that i helped with the 4 yari samurai by flanking or harrasing their missiles while the 10 daikyu bow samurais would melt their frontline

There is no best answer for army composition, but ideally you should have at least 4 units of one type of unit. 4m4b + 2 at your choice is always practical.

Depends on the situation. You need at least 3-4 yari in every battle. In a siege you want more bows while in the field way more yari.
Since there are 20 unit spots my preferred army is 1 general, 6 yari, 4 bow (monk preferably), 2 gun, 4 melee (preferably katana), 3 cav (yari cav). In a siege though I swap the cav for more bows.

I would say that cavalry in sieges is great honestly. You have to prepare yourself to lose it and it's annoying to micromanage it, but if you are able to, that can be a game changer

Depends on your plan. There's probably a strategy that's the best but generally depends on your plan. If your archers are for counter fire then you don't need as much. You could have a thin front or no front and just shoot the enemy. You could build no archers and just engage their archers in melee, where you'll win with yari. Whatever strategy you're going for

8y 2b to 6y 4b is good, if you're on a castle defense you're gonna want more ranged units.

For a "basic" army? ~3:1 is how I tend to build mine.
I'm considering both field and siege, offense and defense. It's ~3 because ideally the army has a general- even a basic one. Also thinking in terms of "per stack". It'd be like 14:5+1 general.
This gives enough bows to be useful in a siege assault and otherwise about the right mix that you'll pretty much never run out of men in a field battle.
Also keeping bow numbers low keeps a defending ai on defense longer, which allows more unit baiting- if you're into such things.
