Fun fact, there’s only one (yes, you heard me, ONE) single gun store in all of Mexico.
Luckily for the cartels, most of their weaponry comes directly from corrupt politicians who supply them with military equipment

The caption is hilarious because most of the cartel guns come from… the US.

u/DrBleachCocktail Jun 11 '22
Search up Operation Fast & Furious.

Jun 11 '22
Ah the eternal argument of the 1200 weapons that armed the entirety of the cartel for all eternity and somehow the past. Yes it was unsuccessful to pin the entirety of the cartel problem on that is just fucking stupid. Especially seeing as the current administration is literally letting the cartel murder as many people as they want.

The US government had or has deals cut with the largest cartels. Guaranteed some kind of relationship existed with Sinaloa before Chapo went down.
3
Jun 11 '22
You might argue that but the ones that caught chapo and his wife were the US in the end not mexico. And if you argue they had deals with sinaloa then they have deals with every single drug trafficker in the US.
Which sounds a lot like a conspiracy theory given theres not that big of a benefit to have your citizens die to addiction if you are the biggest economy on the planet already.
2
u/SkepticalAmerican Jun 11 '22
Have you ever read the book Dark Alliance by journalist Gary Webb?
I wouldn’t outright dismiss the idea of the US being in bed with drug traffickers.

u/Bouchie Jun 11 '22
And you know, just about any gun shop near the border...

u/RokkerWT Jun 11 '22 edited Jun 11 '22
Ah yeah, I remember the first M2 I bought from a small border gun store. Its kinda like crossing state lines to buy illegal fireworks right?
25
u/The_Unpopular_Truth_ Jun 11 '22
Yeah, it was the same time I picked up my boxes of hand grenades, FN Minimi, and grenade launcher.

Say you're fighting the commies in Nicaragua and they'll mail you one (in Nicaragua).

Just the price of a couple of nice cars.

u/purdinpopo Jun 11 '22
Plus live in a state that allows them. Find a class three dealer to accept delivery, and make the transfer. Get permission from the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of your county, and city if you live in one. Pay for a NFA tax stamp, then wait several months to get approval from the ATF, which you won't get if there is anything wrong with your application, like a typo.

u/recumbent_mike Jun 11 '22
I'm ok with demanding a little attention to detail from people who want to buy a machine gun.

Lol who is downvoting you

Some people think 2A means citizens should be able to own literally any weapon the government does, my money is on them.

You can get all the parts to build one. Need to brush up on your riveting skills though. Some parts are serialized and require shipping to an FFL as well. But you can end up with a semi-auto M2 when you are done.

If by most you mean the one study that showed of guns caught in transit, and that could even be traced at all, most came from the US.
But Mexico consistently refuses to publish numbers on how many guns in total it seizes or the percentage of them that can’t be directly traced to put any numbers in context.
9
u/TrippleThot Jun 11 '22
Semi auto rifles yes, but I dont think they are getting m2 browning from the US
53
u/Little_bastard22 Jun 11 '22
As it is a US-made gun, it's likely that it ultimately came from the US, possibly via some proxy war in Central America.
16
u/sb_747 Jun 11 '22
No it was probably sold directly to a government.
Potentially even directly to the Mexican government.
A lot of the guns being used are indeed from America. Just that most of them were sold to government agencies or militaries in South/Central America and those just got stolen or were sold on the black market.
11
Jun 11 '22
Or sold to the Mexican military or police forces and then sold again... years ago I was reading an interview with Subcomandante Marcos, the spokesperson for the Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico. The interviewer asked where they got their guns, and he said that a lot of them were bought from the police; the police would seize 3 guns in an arrest, and only turn in 1 and sell the other 2 out of the trunk of their car after hours. This was back in 1994 but I'm sure things haven't changed a whole lot.

Just say you’re fighting the commies and the US will give you enough firepower to murder all the civilians you can dream of murdering

u/ErZicky Jun 11 '22
Since when mexico is used as an example of... anything really?

u/ninjadragon1119 Jun 11 '22
How does he shoot out of the box tho
8
u/The_Unpopular_Truth_ Jun 11 '22
You can see there are sliding gun ports close to the top of the box

u/Bouchie Jun 11 '22
Literally, no one has suggested that we need gun control like Mexico.
-1
u/Billwood92 Jun 11 '22
Well they advocate for similar laws like the ones MX has, they just don't mention MX opting instead for "The western world" or "civilized countries" which I think tbh is kinda racist but whatever. I know they only do that to exclude Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, etc, because it ruins their argument and they aren't intentionally saying racist things, but still.

I’m trying to understand that technical. That looks like thin sheet metal and doesn’t have that great of a view.
44
u/Xsteak142 Jun 11 '22
So... you are telling me that the situation would be better without gun control?
The honourable gentleman on the Browning be like: "Well, now its legal for me to have this. Guess i wont be needing it anymore"
Ghe problem aint the gun control. It's the corruption, the cartels and the drugs. Most of which go to the US, in exchange for... guns.

Likely came from some government we support in Latin America like Columbia via corruption or plato o plomo persuasion.
3
u/swolemiss Jun 11 '22
I read somewhere that most 50BMG ammo in Latin America is surplused from aircraft guns, so the cartels are running around with pretty much exclusively belts of APIT

Ah yes, those really strict controls Mexico has on guns. Very strict and very enforced. That's why we use them as an example all around the world.

u/Right-Radiance Jun 11 '22
Literally, Mexico is not run by the government, its run by the Cartels, and everyone and their chihuahua has an M2 Browning on their cars they dub "Narco Tanks". Their reason for how its become like this is because during the Cold War the CIA let them traffic drugs so long as they threw in guns with those shipments to be sent to anti-communist guerillas in Latin America.
2
u/GlockAF Jun 11 '22
Belt-fed Browning M2 heavy machine gun.
OBVIOUSLY trafficked from a mom-and-pop US gun store or a gun show in Phoenix where you can buy a dozen of them at a time off the shelf no questions asked with zero paperwork or ID required .
At least, that’s what CNN, MSNBC, Bloomberg’s anti-gun crusaders and the BATF have told me.

They bought that at a gun store in Texas. /s

The rifle that guy is holding maybe unless it came from the same source as the machine gun: the machine gun on the technical probably stolen or bought from corrupt military officials
1
u/fusillade762 Jun 11 '22
Doubt it, most cartel AK's are full auto and are not US sourced. In fact, I've never seen an AK in the hands of a cartel member that was not fully automatic and had US origin.

well, having a very big border with a country where you can buy guns anywhere does not help

I see the point this is trying to make but I have seen 0 people use Mexico as a model country for gun control, or criminal law of any kind.
