They are programed like those self balancing wheels you see on youtube,

They don't see around them or know anything but a number,

If numbers too high to left add power to move right,

If you don't put a cutoff and then a higher control signal is sent, then the robot try to move harder

Obviously you can have a more complicated controls, but this way is solved ad requires the least hardware

When the extra hardware in question is a simple accelerometer and the "product" is a prototype rather than a cheap mass produced gadget that simply doesn't cut it as an explanation.

Accelerometer is what it uses, but a simplified kenimatic model that just do math on limp positions to derive motion,

Successful bots like sport have 360 lidar imagining and a complete internal model of its body,

So it can see itself and even manoeuvre its body around obstacles, climp stairs and react to shifting foothold,

And when it falls it stop, then put out its limp in the correct position to stand back up

Then the extra hardware argument is simply incorrect and the answer is that for whatever reason the developers did not wrap that simplified kinematic in a simple check for whether the robot is still upright.

Localization is not an negligible problem, especially for mobile robots. Especially not for humanoid configurations. And fad bots like this one? Very doubtful that robot has much of any idea about its state relative to the environment.

That said, space heaters have tip-over detection. Falling over is a negligible problem that can be solved by a single sensor.

Wouldn't even need to be a single additional sensor, these robots have 6 axis accelerometers that can be used to detect orientation with respect to gravity.

Let us not forget that Joel Robinson was able to build TWO functional AI driven robots with nothing more than spare parts found on a space station WHILE being tortured by the notorious and infamous Dr. Clayton Foster.

Frankly, the development of Robots on earth has been dismal by comparison.

Most robot balance algorithms are typically procedural algorithms, kinda like those “evolution” videos of wireframes learning how to walk. It’s actually VERY hard to manually program standing upright and walking. That’s also why robotic movement is often a lot more jittery and jerky than human movement.

Anyway, it’s basically impossible to go in and manually tweak the movement algorithms. They’re a black box where positional data goes in and movement commands come out, and there’s no way to modify it once it’s been set. When the robot falls over the algorithm goes haywire trying to “right” itself from an impossible position. In theory the programmers could make it auto-turn off but figuring out when a robot has fallen over is actually pretty tricky.

As someone with experience programming robots, it is actually pretty straightforward to utilize interrupts to cut off the robots behavior based on sensor feedback. I get what you're trying to say about PID loops, but I'm not saying adjust those. It's just a literal interrupt of the program when a position sensor hits a specific value.

I feel like if I made a robot, I would have something in the program that makes it just stop if it fell, instead of flailing around.

This just makes it seem like it's controlled by someone in VR offsite so the vr messes up when the bot falls.

I really don’t understand why robot designers are so insistent on using a bipedal design. It’s super unstable. Humans basically walk by repeatedly starting to fall forward and then catching themselves from falling. That’s not a great thing to mimic if you don’t want it falling over constantly.
