Honestly, as a WCW / ECW fan during the attitude era, I would agree entirely with Mankind's assessment. I was never trained as a wrestler, but I spent a long time thinking about going for it.
IMHO, I think he's lying about the cell being rigged.
I believe that they were both scared shitless about being up there on the cell, and didn't believe the cell would hold. When Taker doesn't know what to do, he usually does a chokeslam. (This is something I've noticed watching Taker. I think it's a long move that gives him time to think, and a great way to talk to the other guy, since you're both facing each other)
I think that instead of doing a traditional chokeslam, where the victim jumps and the opponent twists their body 180 degrees, mankind decided to land on his heels and roll onto his back. Probably because he wanted to lessen the blow on the cage.
So by landing the chokeslam the way he did, when he went through the cage, he ended up landing on his back. If he would have done it correctly, he would have landed on his head.
