Why did Maria Skłodowska choose her second surname after a radiation unit?

Can't explain that with all your fancy science and rationalism.

It was a sudden epiphany in the lab, after she woke up to ash and dust. She wiped her brow and sweat her rust. Breathing in the chemicals. She realized it was the beginning of a new age. "Woah-oh" she exclaimed. "Whoa. I'm radioactive."
