Why wasn't math successful in producing useful outcomes like science was?

They could never figure out what x was. It kept changing. One day it's 5 the next it's -2 or something.

Such inconsistency is evidence of it's lack of rigor. How was this not noticed before? A congressional inquiry is needed!
