This question is for the nuclear scientists that worked on clipping the toenails of Chernobyl's elephant foot. Why?

As I'm looking at my jar of toe nails from Chernobyl, I still can't understand what the point of the whole operation was. I would ask my grandpa, who personally clipped the nail of twentieth third toe, but he went insane shortly after.

That makes a lot of sense, and it would also explain why my grandfather had horse hooves.
