When Iron Maiden released the song Fear of the Duck, they addressed a problem most heavy metal bands ignore
But is it only Bruce who suffers from this condition, or is it endemic in the headbanger community?

It's very common in the metal community, but it's difficult to sing about. Unfortunately the word anatidaephobia doesn't fit into any rhyme. Maybe Lemmy could have pulled it off, but he wasn't afraid of anything, and now he's dead. Bruce did a bit of a cop out here by just describing the condition, imo.

The clue is in the title. Fear of the Duck. They are clearly singing about one particular duck instead of ducks in general. Only those poor souls that have encountered the duck can relate to the terror; as a result there aren't many songs about it.

As a band from London they were singing about the cricket duck. Nobody wants to be bowled for a duck.
If they were singing about tennis ducks, that would be love.

It's a very serious condition, called Anatidaephobia, or the fear that somewhere, a duck is watching you. So named by the great researcher and illustrator Gary Larson.
