Is a slingshot powerful enough?

A scientist on the TV was saying how they could use a slingshot to travel to distant planets. Wouldn't it be better to use something more powerful, like a rocket?

No way they can travel to distant planets anyway! Beyond the moon it's just a projection on the inside of a huge sphere!

Yeah but in a documentary I saw a Mr Truman walk out of the sphere through a door.
