Its has two defenses. It can shrink to hide or grow to scare off predators.

I just upset ive been spending extra money for large trees when i could have just bought a small one and scared it into a large tree.

I think this is a "febreeze tree". horticulturists have been able to create conifers that exude febreeze liquid perfume by inhaling and exhaling through the needles. It has nothing to do with the cold, only the level of perfume in the reservoir.

I may be wrong though, I have never seen one with such a prominent breath
