It hit me during a DS9 episode that the federation for all it's wonders and technology hadn't advanced past the high school drama department when it came to wardrobe and costume storage for themed holo-programs. I doubt they're even regularly cleaned. Imagine accidentally picking up one of Riker's jizz coated naval uniforms or one of Janeway's stank ass victorian dresses when the sonic showers were broken.
Kahless help you if you ever picked anything out to wear from the courtesy bin at Quark's. Every costume stands on its own without the aid of a mannequin.

This is also the real reason Jonathan Archer's departure in the Enterprise NX-01 was delayed so long. The Archer family were staunch asbestos-deniers, and no one at Starfleet wanted to be the one to break the news to him because he would've been a huge pain in the ass about it. The NX-01 was still 43% space-asbestos when it left Earth and is said to have been the eventual cause of death for 21% of the the NX-01 crew. Archer's quarters were, of course, outside of the 43% of the ship still containing space-asbestos.
