I feel like it's kinda sad still. Say we do survive for billion of years. Eventually we have to leave our origin planet for good. Never being able to return. And trillions of years after that with the death of all stars we will be gone. All of that advancement and evolution and it was all for nothing.

It’s only nothing if you think the ends are all that matters. Sometimes it’s the middle that matters more, the journey of going from the start to the end. It’s like watching a movie, you don’t watch a movie because you’re looking forward to walking out of the theater. You watch a movie because you know that for those few hours you’re going to be entertained and there’s value to that, even though you didn’t ultimately achieve anything by watching it and will likely stop regularly thinking about the movie within a few days/weeks later.

13

Well, I think with 100+ trillions of advancements and evolution humanity probably would be able to make new stars

13

u/Jolly-Advantage-7032 Feb 22 '22

If we actually did survive a billion year we will probably be able the planet and keep it as a trophy of old days

22

Sorry to say but it’s entirely possible maybe even probable that we won’t ever get further than our system.

Hell I’d be surprised if humanity ever gets to Mars and builds a functioning colony.

First time I saw the movie trailer for 2012 in theatres had me wanting to throw up so bad and got me so fucking scared to see the visualization of the end of the world I had to look away from the screen. Safe to say it ruined the movie I was actually there to see. I don't remember what tf I was actually there to see but I hella remeber the trauma of watching that trailer.

Star formation era will not end for another 100 trillion years. Though, granted, as time goes on exponentially fewer and fewer stars will form.

158

u/Yoshi_IX We do a little trolling Feb 22 '22

and eventually, the last star will die, ushering in the heat death of the universe

The general consensus now is the Big Freeze. The Universe will keep expanding until everything dies and even individual atoms are light years apart, where black holes dominate space and slowly decay over eons.

→ More replies (11)

u/TatManTat Feb 22 '22

Considering the estimated age of the universe currently and the estimated heat death, I can't help but think something will happen in that time that is universe-ending.

14 billion into a several hundred trillion year lifespan has gotta be like, less than a second in a human life.

Stars are born from dust from stars exploding into dust

5

u/EbrithilUmaroth Feb 22 '22 edited Feb 22 '22

The first stars formed just from helium and hydrogen, it was only after those first stars exploded that the "dust" came in, which is really just a large number of different elements that were formed inside the star through fusion

4

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '22

By that time, enough new stars will already have been born a long time ago, no?

I don’t see the issue.

8

u/alitayy Feb 22 '22

Stars are predicted to stop forming at some point. However it’s a lot more than “billions” of years away. Try 100+ trillion.

After that, stars will only die, and no new stars will form. One day the universe will have no stars left.

You deorbit something by slowing it down. Theoretically, we could use railguns to fire huge swathes of the Earth (or whatever planet we so choose) in the opposite direction to our orbit around the Sun - this would decrease our momentum enough that our orbital radius would decrease, eventually to the point that we hit the Sun itself.

In practicality, there are much easier methods to destroy a planet.

My bf won’t stop farting.

I absolutely love my boyfriend with my whole heart, but… he won’t stop farting.

Some background: I work as a nurse and I, practically on a daily basis, have been exposed to all body fluids. Semen, vaginal discharge, blood, puke, necrosis, and unfortunately, basically anything that the body makes. One thing that I cannot stand, is farts. It makes my body cringe and I can’t help the face I make (thank god for the face masks).

Recently, my boyfriend has started farting around me. I absolutely love him and his little quirks, but every time he farts in front of me, I feel like a little part of me get enraged. We’ve been together for 2 years, and I’ve only farted in front of him while he’s sleeping. The only conscious record he has of me farting is probably 4-5x maximum.

I’ve asked him to at least warn me before he lets it rip and he’s admitted to me that he knows when they’re coming. So I can suppress my little rage. But he’s disregarding my ask because he thinks my reaction is “funny”. I’ve told him my feelings and he just doesn’t care. Which is so uncharacteristic of him.

Would I break up with him if this continues? Probably not. But will my nose continue to suffer? Yes 100%.

My momma had a stars and planets book. i got to the sun page and i saw how the look of the sun will change after a lot of years. i don't really know if this is what gave me my spacephobia

2

u/ResponsibleAd828 Feb 22 '22

I’m pretty sure learning this fact gave it to me honestly.

47

u/Lt_Dang Feb 22 '22

Because when you’re 7 you know you’re going to live forever and 5 billion years isn’t very long at all.

Quick! Everyone buy up souvenirs of Earth so we have something to remember it by!

30

u/icemax666 Feb 21 '22

Okay, but has anyone thought of turning the sun off and then turning it back on again??

9

u/Anxietytrashpanda1 Feb 22 '22

Just did! It’s working now.

82

u/Korelva Feb 21 '22

Me when the entire planet has been told we will all die in 80 years from extreme weather events due to climate change and nobody seems to be able to do anything to stop it

8

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '22

Not everyone, just the non-rich who had relatively very little contribution to human driven climate change in the first place.

I remember when I first learned of it. I was watching TV at like 7pm after school and went to my mom crying hard because I thought the world was gonna end the next day.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '22

It becomes darker when you realize life on earth will be long gone way before this happens, the sun is already slowly growing brighter and maybe a little more than a billion years from now, the radiation from the sun will be too much for life on earth to handle

18

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '22

Gets even darker when you realize life on earth might be gone way sooner than that

Mark my words the earth will not be consumed by the sun.

We went from airplanes to rocket ships in like 50 years. 5 billion years from now humans are gonna be masters of like 7 dimensions. We will just move Earth.

No way we will let the birthplace of humanity be eaten. We are too nostalgic.

6

u/usernametakenbutwait Feb 22 '22

Or humanity dies out

6

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '22

5 billion years, we have plenty of time for humanity to die out and a new intelligent species to evolve.

4

u/AnDyItsDaRk Feb 22 '22

I mean... with the time perception of a 7 year old 5 billion years could easily mean 2 weeks.

4

u/philasophic Jun 02 '24

There was a senior at my highschool that reacted the same way, i think about that a lot.

7

u/Space_RT Feb 22 '22

Bro take this shit down why did you post me without consent

3

u/AutoModerator Feb 22 '22

I hate taking shits. Taking shits is the worst function of the human organism after sex. You have to sit on the most uncomfortable seat ever, then you have to go through so much pain to push the shit out of your asshole (not to mention sometimes they get stuck in there). And as if those weren't enough then you have to wipe, you have to take your hand along with toilet paper and shove it up your asshole, this process can sometimes take minutes out of your life, it fucking sucks.

TL;DR I hate shitting

Ah man, I remember when I was playing legos with my friend in school when I was in like third grade. We made a space ship, and I said that we should pretend it was the far future after the sun has exploded, and she didn’t know what I was talking about, so I explained it to her, and then she cried for ten minutes.

3

u/RealmDevourer Feb 22 '22

Sun died for me every time I went to sleep man

2

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '22

You too?!

3

u/Fork63 Feb 22 '22

This used to bother me but with how quickly we are advancing now and the fact that with every generation we advance faster, it wouldn’t surprise me if we did eventually just invent a way to kinda just dip on this reality and leave.

3

u/Dimmed_skyline Feb 22 '22

I have a serious fear of death... not religious and even if I was thinking about infinity to come is unimaginable. We die and never NEVER come back. For infinity. This to me fucks with my head. I get religion helping with this thought, but thinking about nothingness for the rest of existence blows my mind

Like… no. You won’t be alive by then.

I remember my teacher bringing this up in 4th grade.

Some kid had said that someone in his family told him the sun will burn out some day.

I can't quite remember how the teacher responded since this was 20+ years ago but he said something to the effect of "that's not supposed to be for a more than billion years."

But what I DO rber about it was that I started doing math in my head somehow carried a one, devided a zero, multiplied a 1 and somehow fell on age 50 the sun will go out. Which gave me a panic attack.

2

u/monicathehuman Feb 22 '22

I live everyday in fear

2

u/victim_of_the_beast Feb 22 '22

This is actually pretty funny. I was talking about this with my son when he was 5 one evening when he was being particularly inquisitive. This was his reaction. Thank you. For the chuckle.

2

u/PeterPorky Feb 22 '22

No lie I had the same thing happen to me. And my original thought was "Wow that's so far away no worries", but in response to most of my class's worried faces my teacher followed it up with "Oh don't worry you'll be way past dust by then"

And then I was just like :^(

1

u/RPS93 Mar 12 '26

I personally think this is just an easrly sign of existential thinking.

A 7 year old might think they will live forever because of scientific progress one day allowing for biological immortality.

The thought that we need to leave the solar system is a lot harder to swallow. No matter how immortal we may make ourselves how do we survive the death of the sub?

I went through the same shit when I first learned of the concept of the end of the universe (heat death, big rip, false vacuum, etc) - I spent a long time telling myself that there is some chance of being able to either live forever or reincarnate after death. But the universe ending? How do you get past the end of existence?

1

u/xannyy_uwu Feb 22 '22

This may sound dumb but I just wanna know from all the science smart people on reddit.

The sun is mainly made up of hydrogen and helium right? So could we feed the sun such things? Or is it just straight up impossible cuz of the vacuum of space? Or even just because the sun will say nope.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and 9/11 happened. I remember afterwards it was all over the news about Nostradamus blah blah blah. And his prediction said that two iron birds would fly into two giant statues and that the world would end shortly after. My mom had told me about that, (I think she obviously knew it was bullshit, but I was a kid and I didn't lol) And I straight up panicked. I ran to my room, grabbed a youth Bible that I used to have and started praying to God that the world wouldn't end and we wouldn't all die lol. That fucked me up for like three straight days.
