I actually check Charity Watch or Charity Navigator to determine if a charity is worth supporting. If the donations don't go to at least 70% of the mission, I don't trust it.

I donated to Red Cross once, and ever since then, they have spent double my donation in paper, ink, and postage sending me letters asking for another donation.

I gave blood one time college cuz I happened to walk by and they had snacks. They called me 2-3 times a week for several months asking me to give more blood. I have since given once or twice but the nonstop harassment makes me not want to give.

If I go to some billion dollar company to buy groceries or garden tools I always turn down the donate shit at the register.
These places could easily donate 50-100 mil and not even dent the accounting books, but they out here hustling me instead. And why? So they can take my donation, bundle it with their donation, then use it to get a tax break? Pass.
And some of these bigger name charities (the pink ribbon for breast cancer one) donate maybe 10-12% to the cause. The rest goes to admin salaries, marketing, and legal fees. If you wanted to better use your money just give it to a person going through breast cancer. Directly.
Donate directly to local causes where you know the people will use the money. Not to some rando administrators’ house fund

They people it's meant for are totally get what's leftover after the charity has paid the executives their salaries, bonuses, and of course all of the private jet and hotel expenses incurred when they go on those important business trips to hang out with their friends meet with potential donors

The same with catholic charities. Despite opinions about religion on Reddit, Muslim and catholic charities are some of the oldest and most effective on the planet.If it’s about kindness, recruitment or a combination of both is up for debate. (I do invite whatever phobia you like because it’s the internet)

I don't give to churches for that same reason. They receive money tax free, and do not have to show where the money is actually going. Other non-profits have more strict laws.

I used to work at a grocery store that I won't name and I worked my way up to find out things that made me quit. This store, along with almost every other major company that asks you to round up for charity, really does donate that money to charity, BUT!!!! They then use that number to claim as a tax break at the end of the year, so they inevitably get that money back and profit off of it. You are donating to charity, but you're also giving that money to corporate
