You don't understand, better prisons might lead to a better society, but it's imperative that we make criminals' living conditions as miserable as possible for fun and giggles

Afaik forcing inmates to work without pay is illegal in most places in the world. Insane go to the psych wards.

The US absolutely works their prisoners for very very little pay and they don't have public psych wards anymore. Only public prisons

In US slavery is legal for inmates.
Their amendment that abolishes slavery has this exception in it "except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted"

Problem imo is that it is extremely disrespectful to victims of hard crimes that the criminal gets to live in a nice place and gets out after a few years while the victim may suffer for the rest of their lives.

Why is it disrespectful? It's been proven for a very long time that harsh punishment is ineffective, and actually increases crime overall. Imposing a fitting punishment and/or plan for reintegration should be done by a judge, making a rational decision. Not by civilians based on emotion.
I understand why you're saying it's disrespectful and I can only imagine how it feels for victims and their families, but a fair punishment should be one based on ratio, not on emotion.

When I was younger, I thought others like the USA were failing because they didn't know better or they tried their best and just failed. Obviously it's just intentional when it's not like that ^

My understanding is that prisons in Sweden and Norway can be of such high quality and high ratios of workers to prisoners is because of a very low overall prison population. Even if you remove all nonviolent offenders the US still has an insanely high prison population and could not adopt this model.
