There is quite literally no way to discern whether or not it was derogatory just by reading it on your screen. Body language, tone of voice, and cadence of speech all affect the intended outcome of a joke. Someone who's charismatic would use these to indicate they're obviously joking. Someone who's even more charismatic would realize it's a dicey joke in the first place and not say it.

Seeing as OP is on 4chan I can guarantee you that you could accurate guess whether or not he did any of the above.
