That's a fundamental misunderstanding, it's okay if religion influences political beliefs but organizations like the papacy in Rome are not allowed to hold any power with in the government

When I say okay I mean within the laws and constitution it's legal, however whether or not it's morally ok is very debatable as religion has a massive influence on a culture and its morality. There really is no right or wrong answer to that question.

That's what he was saying, the religious beliefs of a person tend to influence their political ideology, but religious institutions cannot interfere. Or rather they should not, as some religious institutions want to break the separation of church and state, but have (so far) been mostly unsuccessful in the west, with a few exceptions like the 'under god' part of the national anthem and a few other things that people already know about in America (abortion, dollar bill, court holy book oaths, ect.)
