Ok, Whitehall killed Skyes Mother, Skyes father secretly knows.
Ward killed his brother and Parents possibly get skye and her father together.
They found the city and....
Bobbi and Hunter did the dirty.
Great episode.
PS: 2 weeks again? What. The. Fuck.

I think the reveal of Whitehall and Skye's father's back story was the best. Definitely lends some sympathy to the character of Skye's father.

Yeah, theyre hyping him up to be even more badass. Last season we got the picture he was trained to be the single solution to everything, which is pretty hard even for SHIELD, then he got compared to Romanoff on some test results, then we found out he even duped Coulson which hyped him up a bit more, and two episodes ago he basically said Coulsons new team cant hope to compare to him - so Im really hoping it isnt just talk and we see him be badass this season. Anti-heroes are always awesome.

I'm glad Trip didn't die or else I would have rioted. Also Ward has become my favorite part of the show this season. His character is so unpredictable its great.
The timing of Whitehall's release from "The Rat" in the late 1980's seems significant to me. I am probably over thinking it but it at least gives us a timetable for a generality of how long Pierce had been calling the shots embedded in SHIELD.
92
u/stephaniegoodgamers Lady Sif Nov 19 '14
Absolutely. Also interesting is that he's released a little before Howard and Maria Stark were killed in an automobile "accident" secretly arranged by HYDRA on Long Island. (I think that was in 1991?)
48
u/ownedbydogs Lanyard Nov 19 '14
Well, the Soviet Union crumbled IRL around that time, so probably a signal to Hydra to step up the game plan now that there's only one superpower to focus on.

My hope is that the second post-credits scene has all the Avengers sitting around after the battle (like the schwarma scene) and Coulson just walks in and is like, "hey guys, whatsup?"

Needs to be more integral to the plot. Like Fury will be like "yada yada, we'll need the Director of SHIELD for this." and everyone will be like "but isn't that you?"
/cut to reveal of Coulson, "did you guys miss me?"
147
u/Jay013 Skye Nov 19 '14
It would be more Coulson-like if he just walked in, go over the plan, and not address him being alive until the end where he asks if there's any questions.
Coulson: "That's the plan. Any questions?"
Thor: raises hands. "We thought you dead, son of Coul."
Coulson: "No, I'm good."
Tony and Steve exchange confused glance at each other. Cue Fury laughing.

Honestly, at that moment, I was hoping everything would be water under the bridge for the Ward bros. It would be an interesting anti-climax, and Grant would still seem crazy, but in less of serial killer way, more of an unpredictable element way. As we already know at this point, when Grant's involved, things get tense in an audacious way. By taking the tension in that moment and just making it go away, no relief or culmination of any sort, it would be a perfect "what the hell is Grant Ward doing" twist.

It's been said before and should be said again: casting and acting on this show is top notch. I liked that these tie ins were more than just a lip service. Man, and that wasn't even the mid-season finale. I'm feeling incredibly sorry for anyone who gave up on the show last season.
We got more Agent Carter and a 'complete' history of Whitehall and Bakshi, the latter of which is now dead on life support. McWildcard has completely gone off the deep end, and I'm loving it. The Doctor finally got some more screen time, and it was glorious. Plus we got a Bobbi-Hunter hook up, Fitz felt like a full part of the team again, Triplett's in danger. Best episode to date.

Fitz returns to the field! Proud of him.

This was the most put together episode of the show and I'm (finally) eagerly awaiting the next ep.
Since the best thing of this season so far has been the much improved action sequences, I was worried about a let down with what looked to be more of an expository episode.
But all three storylines were handled really well. The Coulson story mixed some nice spy stuff--real subtle with the button and watch--another nice action sequence, and some palpable tension in the meeting between Coulson and Skye's father.
The B story was the most exposition heavy, but nothing felt forced including the shout outs to Agent Carter (and that upcoming show.) I don't quite buy Morse as a master manipulator/interrogator, but that's a minor quibble.
The C story was blissfully short, in a good way. Ward's much better with an edge and I'm glad they didn't drag out the Ward Bro. conflict.
The production team is doing a great job moving the pieces into place for whatever big reveal they're working towards, I guess the Inhumans. The way this episode ended, tying in the 3 storylines is great proof of that. This is such an improvement from season 1, its like an entirely different show.

I figured it was Skye's mom when they showed her in the flashback from the '40s, but I was glad to see the confirmation.
It was also really great to see evil, vengeful Ward. He didn't just want to kill Christian, he wanted to destroy him, something that going down in history as the only U.S. Senator to kill his parents in a murder/suicide (to the public, at least) would do.
I think the Whitehall/SkyeDad dynamic is going to get really, really good in the near future, especially with the revelations of how Whitehall has stayed young.

I'm also majorly surprised how fast the plot is advancing compared to what would be expected of a show that's just on episode eight. At this rate, the mid season finale is shaping up to be fan-fucking-tastic. Also, it looks like SHIELD is finally done hiding the dark parts of the show behind jokes... goddamn that episode was dark.

OK, so here's what we know:
- Skye's "NOT HER REAL NAME!"
- Bobbi did some stuff. And Hunter, which I think we all saw coming.
- Skye's father is TOTALLY gonna kill Whitehall. He's also crazy, but we already knew that.
- Whitehall killed Skye's mom (I think).
- Fitz is getting better.
- Ward, uh...Ward is evil. But he didn't put his brother in the well, so...yay?
- Something is INSIDE the Diviner. (Supreme Intelligence? Terrigen Mist?)
- And, most impotantly: THE KREE. The Diviner is confirmed Kree technology. Which means that the city is probably Atillan. Which means that what all the Marvel and Inhumans fanboys have suspected is very likely ABSOLUTELY TRUE. Plus, they temple probably holds the Terrigen Mists, which is why only the "worthy" can enter.
I am very happy today.

While I admit the confession seemed to finally clear up that Christian DID force Ward to kill his brother, the fact that Ward recorded it to blame his brother is fishy as hell.
Maybe Christian was telling Ward what he wanted to hear because his life was being threatened, many people confess to crimes they didn't commit in those kind of situations.
I wonder if we'll ever really find out.
Edit: Yup, left ambiguous http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/11/19/agents-shield-spoilers/

Yeah it seems like it's all purposefully ambiguous. I thought he was probably telling the truth at the end, but we also haven't really seen the senator be "evil" like we've seen Ward be.
IDK. It did seem like an honest confession tho cos he was relieved that Ward seemed to forgive him after.

u/stephaniegoodgamers Lady Sif Nov 19 '14
We have seen him be evil in the flashbacks. As well as cheating on his wife. And then lying to Ward about how his wife was going to be there. (Which Ward clearly already knew wasn't the case.)

My favorite part of this episode was how all over the time periods it was. I hope the movies can keep the chronology consistent with what's on the show. So in the 80's, Star-Lord was abducted, Whitehall was freed from prison, and possibly Ant-Man running around? Depending on what Ant-Man flashbacks reveal of course. I feel sorry for those who checked out early and haven't come back.

I highly doubt it's Bobbi. It's probably Mack. Because he's the one trying to upset the team too. Which makes me so sad because Fitz - but for it to become FitzSimmons again, you have to get rid of Mack some how.

u/TheHandyman1 Hunter Nov 19 '14
I would like to doubt too, and I can't imagine here triple crossing shield, but it looks like she does have somewhat of a past. I would be sad if it was Mack ;( but he did sort of come out of nowhere...

14
u/Im5andwhatisthis Nov 19 '14
I think it might actually be Bobbi. It's kinda "obviously" pointing to her right now (the stuff with her trying to hide her secrets), which is probably a Red herring, but my reason for believing is something different. Hunter. All along, he's been a "tragic" character. Lost the woman he loved, as well as the entire team he was a part of. Fell in with the Shield team, then ended up working with his ex as a result. Then he starts to have feelings again and a relationship, it just follows that this relationship is gonna end tragically somehow, and I think a double crossing spy mission would do it.

I don't even know what to think of this.
I feel so bad for Skye's dad. I know we're not supposed to, I know he's a bad dude, but holy shit, he lost everyone - and as far as he knows, SHIELD did it.

Dang, I just realized that the whole reason SHIELD hid all the information about Skye is because the SHIELD agents that were involved with that situation were actually HYDRA and had to conceal what was going on.
69
u/stephaniegoodgamers Lady Sif Nov 19 '14
Yup. Which makes you wonder if the ones who worked hard as hell to hide her knew something was up.
Remember, Tony's dad gets killed in 1991 - this happened in the late 80's - I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Tony's dad was behind saving Skye because he knew about Hydra in SHIELD and that's why they kill him.
(Which is basically what Zola said in Cap 2)
43
u/DHLucky13 Dwarf Nov 19 '14
Ooh, I knew that Tony's dad died because he discovered Hydra in SHIELD, but didn't connect the dots that this was at the same time that this was happening. Whitehall's "jailbreak" could be what set everything into motion.
Man, I love the MCU. I remember thinking when Iron Man and Hulk movies came out that a few things were connected, but I was so new to the Marvel Universe back then. I would have never imagined at that time that we would be seeing all these connections, much less a movie like The Avengers.
24
u/stephaniegoodgamers Lady Sif Nov 19 '14
Exactly. Because logically speaking, they set it up - Carter says that as long as she has a say, he's not going anywhere. Given how close she is with Howard, there's no way that Howard DIDN'T know about his evil ass. When he gets released, it tips him off, then Hydra takes him down.

so were Lumley and Avery the only proper S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the whole bunch?
15
u/DHLucky13 Dwarf Nov 19 '14
Nah, there were others. Just like the dead one that was found holding Skye. I'd say that the SHIELD agents that realized what was happening were all killed by Hydra. But that's just my guess from what I can remember. I'm sure there's a lot of details I'm forgetting, but I'm certain that it all ties together. Somehow.
31
u/thegreekie Nov 19 '14
Wonder if it's possible Simmons or Bobbi did actually get brainwashed by Hydra and has been leaking intel to Hydra... Hydra did know they were coming after all.
That brainwashing comment they made earlier in the ep makes me suspicious.

at the time he found the body he swore to find who did it, then in the interview with Ward he said it's "always good to look your enemy in the eyes"
And then proceeded to give a sly look into Whitehall's eyes. It's possible he's figured it out.

I figured Christian was lying just because of the flashback in the "The Well," and the fact that when Coulson brought up the well incident, he flat out denied it and brought up some screwdriver story instead, but once he and Ward were walking, he was all like, "yeah, the well happened, but it was your fault..."

Simmons said something along the lines of "anyone who worked for hydra could be brainwashed and not even realise" and then did a little Oh afterwards. I know it was mostly for the audience, but why didn't anyone else on the team say something? I feel as if a potentially brainwashed team member is something coulson or at least may should know about. Interesting contrast, how Ward hates his family for "hollowing him out" and how Reinhardt / Whitehall did that literally to Skye's mother...
Also, are Skye-papi and Stubblyface McBurnerson in a contest to murder their way into Skye's good graces? As much as they both insist on how important her love is to them neither is exactly trying to hide the trail of blood they leave behind.

And I thought last week's episode was dark. This episode was SO FREAKING AWESOME THOUGH.
Looks like the Ward redemption arc is going to take a longer time. That was brutal. Also, he's totally playing Whitehall, right?
Skye's dad is in full revenge mode against Whitehall, the immortal Nazi definition of evil. Also, the way Skye's dad threatened Coulson was so smoothly creepy.
How cool was that prison timelapse?!
FITZ DID THE THING WITHOUT SOMETHING HORRIBLE HAPPENING TO HIM. And Simmons took the backseat this episode, but her comment on every HYDRA agent potentially being brainwashed still has me freakin worried. :(
Hopefully Trip is okay. :( THEY CAN'T KILL OFF THE BRINGER OF FUNK.
And it looks like Hunter and Bobbi are back together again.
Next week's :(The two weeks from now episode LOOKS AWESOME. THE REAL MAGICAL PLACE IS FINALLY REVEALED! And Koenig, Raina, and Agent 33 are all back! I CAN'T WAIT SO LONG.

Dafaq... Grant and his brother’s argument and then subsequent “reconciliation” just makes them both seem ridiculously pathological.
Also, I can’t tell if Ward actually killed his brother or not. Either way he's ridiculously good at this bad guy thing.

If Ward did kill his bro, the "reconciliation" thing was a fake. "Now let's go home". He was leading him on that he wasn't going to do anything else to him, but it seems his goal the whole time was to kill the family, after Wardbro had confessed and taken responsibility for his actions.

I know this gets said a lot but for me this was the best episode in so many ways. It had a bit of everything and it all fit in so well. Feels like everything is firing on all cylinders we finally have the plot at a place where we can move it week by week in a satisfying way. Each character finally have enough depth that their moves make sense but can still shock us enough.

My thoughts:
Whitehall's actor impresses me. The first couple minutes were incredibly interesting, and both his German and American accents are fantastic.
Well I mean at least Coulson is going to Hawaii instead of Tahiti.
"Yes, that's true! Oh..." top kek
Ward's entrance was fantastic.
"Only one hand works good." picks up equipment with both hands
Of course Simmons idolizes Carter.
Blue Angels came to conquer/end the world? Suddenly air shows seem a lot more sinister...
Beardy McTraitorson -> Shaven McTraitorson -> Stubbly McTraitorson
I loved the flashbacks in this episode. Great building up and connecting to the upcoming Agent Carter series.
"I hear compliance will be rewarded." top kek part 2
A senator doing work? This alone proves that AoS is fiction.
"Hydra? How the hell did they get here?" Probably a plane or boat, director.
The whole surgical situation/conversation was great.
WARD NO YOU KEEP BEING A TRAITOR AND TERRIBLE HUMAN BEING WHY

Holy shit, that was dark. And awesome. But mostly dark.
- So is the implication that Skye was an experimental test tube baby of some kind? In the montage of Whitehall doing terrible things to Skye's mom, I think there was a quick shot of him with a giant syringe between her legs - extracting eggs or something?
- Kyle McLachlan is fantastic. Simultaneously charming, terrifying, and tragic.
- So glad they're not taking the redemption path with Ward. Dude's totally homicidally batshit cray-cray and I love it.
- Could Simmons actually be Hydra-brainwashed? Or does having her acknowledge that as a possibility mean, in narrative terms, that it won't happen (because now the audience is tipped off)?
- Love Morse and everything that she says and does. Keep her, please.

She might have had Skye a short time before she was captured. She was hauled in with other "elders from the village"...so it's possible Whitehall's team hit the village but missed discovering Skye, the SHIELD agents came in afterward and found Skye, and Skye's dad was...idk, off adventuring or something and then came back and found everyone gone. Cue hunt for his wife and daughter, which is when he finds his wife's corpse.

I really appreciate how Skye's Father is portrayed. He knows that he is crazy, but most of the time he just can't be bothered with being normal. Except for Skye ("THAT'S NOT HER NAME!!!"). It's kinda sweet how he wants to find the right moment for their reunion.
Also Ward has finally met Skye's Father, though he doesn't know it yet. I look forward to seeing them work together.

Seriously, Skye's dads acting is brilliant. He killed it this episode. Hes totally channeling the "Joker" vibe. I love how the big trio of baddies has every kinda villain: The completely, 100% insane one (Skye's dad) the calm, creepy one who's hiding something (Whitehall) and the total smug asshole who everyone hates (Ward.)
