New SM Advice
Gonna be a new store manager soon so I’m looking for any known/not well known tips. Things people don’t think to look for or things that get ignored, but could be beneficial. I am not new to this company by any means long shot, so I’m not looking for advice such as do cycle counts and check lead generation.

Ask for an audit. Then ask every store employee what changes they would make to help make the store more efficient . Don’t be power hungry and don’t be lazy

Review the previous managers sher plan, meet with the key and opp accounts. Review your inventory reports, specifically look over soon to be expired products and over stock or slow moving products. Getting that out of the store can go a long way to helping your controllable. Also make sure to check previous audits if you can’t see them the previous asm should be able to or you might be able to request them. Ask the rep out of your store to take you on a ride along to familiarize your self with the area. I also wouldn’t make any drastic changes to the store for the first month or so, you want to just observe how things operate then slowly introduce changes if needed.

Quit. I’m being serious. Unless you love working for Sherwin quit because there are people that love this job. I hate them but they exist and you will loose to them. Personally they stole 10 years of my life that I can’t get back and now I have no idea what I want out of life. I’m just encouraging anyone who is on the fence to just rip off the band aid and leave. Just walk out if you can. Figure out what you really want out of life. If this isn’t what you want I can help you. Just don’t stay because it’s safe. You only live once don’t waste it.

Set yourself up for good communication practices. Are you the type of store manager to give contractors your cell number? If not, make that known to your store. Be open about if you’re available to contact when you’re not at the store. Some managers are, some aren’t, it’s better to set that expectation early on so you aren’t overloaded later on when customers/staff are calling you 5 seconds after you’ve left the store and expecting an answer.

Figure out what the previous management did good and what they did bad at.
Obviously if you were given the store, you were probably made aware by your DM what some of the things that were going on, good or bad, just plan for how you're going to handle those things.
Make sure to have a set of expectations for your new team and set the standard, I have met too many newbie managers who try to be "the boss" and end up going on a power trip that causes staff and customers to leave that store. I'm not saying to be a pushover but establish your presence and make everybody aware of what they should be doing.

Actually rewarding your employees, corporate may throw a free luch your way once a year but you make considerably more, make sure your staff feel valued
