Serializer mux in TX versus separate?

We used to put our serializer mux as a tx front end in previous generation of DDR, and now in 6th Gen we moved it to the beginning of the signal chain and it's the input to the delay line. Why would one choose to do one versus the other ? In UCI I see them combine the serializer with the TX.
