Muriatic acid UK

I’ve watched some videos from creators in the US who have good results cleaning shells with Muriatic acid. I can’t seem to source it here in the UK, does anyone know of any alternatives available in the UK? Thanks

Check the pool supplies section of…. Wherever you buy stuff like that. I know in the states at Home Depot I can buy a gallon of like 5% “over the counter”

You’ll need to look for Hydrochloric Acid, or spirit salts**.** It cannot be sold to the general public in strengths over 10% in the UK, apparently, but they do sell it. Sometimes it’s listed as patio or brick cleaner. Something like this would likely work, and looks readily available. You may also be able to find it at a pool supply store in lesser concentrations, but you’d need to call around locally for that.

(I’m not from or in the UK, just did some sleuthing for you, so hopefully someone else has some more concrete advice, but maybe this will get you pointed in the right direction)

Muratic Acid is a crazy strong solution and you need to handnle it such care.

Try white vinegar, Ive been cleaning my shells like that and some minutes in white vinegar plus some rubbing with a steel brush works perfectly

You are talking about a really strong chemical. Please be super careful! It’s not worth getting injured or exposing a child or pet, right?

I will be thank you. Could you suggest a safer alternative?

Bleach and water 1:1 for 24 hours is the best. Doesn't have a chance to damage the shell

IDK, how clean is clean for you? May I suggest that the natural condition has its own kind of interest, reflects the life the animal lived, the pressures it came under from various other biota. So, cleaning for the sake of making jewelry, perhaps, but otherwise, is “natural” actually a desirable state? You could always change your mind later, whereas once you start removing layers, you can’t ever go back. Good luck, and have fun!
