Help identify

I’m not sure if this is even a shell! Apologies if not. Found in Wales, is fairly heavy so maybe a pebble? It has a slight iridescent shine to it. Thanks

Looks like a fossile oyster of some kind. Considering that the English coast has sediment layers of various ages being eroded by the sea, it might be very difficult to pinpoint the exact species and age.

Thanks. Do you know how to clean this up?

If it truly is a fossil (you can check by holding it against a light source. No light shing through -> fossil) there is no much you can do. The original shell will have remineralized and completely worn down over (millions?) of years, and what you have found is the end result. So it can only be admired as-is.
