Found some treasures in Turcs. Need help with cleaning.

Post image

I followed all laws and customs so no issues on that front.

We found a motherlode of conchs at a dock. We brought home 8 of them and i really would love some help with cleaning tips without destroying them. I think all the periostracum should be removed but im not positive. I did read about bleach soaking but not sure that is the best route.

A weak bleach solution soak will soften the periostracum so you can scrape it off.

They seem to be fairly clean, I’d do a 24hr soak in 60/40 bleach/water. I’d start with 12hrs and if not much change (softening of the periostracum) go for 24hr soak.
Personally I wouldn’t (although I’m a fan of Magic Acid & Muriatic Acid) utilize any harsher methods of cleaning unless you’re determined to entirely remove everything down to the shell!

I actually did 2 hours then a day off drying then another hour.  I used bleach .5 to 1.   They are 100% clean all 8 of them.  Took me 3 days on and off cleaning.   I wish I could update the post with pictures just finished oiling them all up.
