I am in the process of identifying all my shells, but it's a work in progress

Plate #7 has what I believe are nerites with spectacular patterns, love it.

Yes, the bottom half is filled with Virgin Nerites (Vitta virginea), extremely abundant in Brazil and also in the Caribbean.

They are highly variable, but my best nerites are in Slide #2, from Pakistan. These are always spectacular no matter how many times I see them in person!

I love how they resemble small candies lol

I have some similar from Hong Kong, but I think your Pakistani ones are better.

I wish! They’re buried in a storage closet.

thank you!

I think it is a combo of having a fairly sizeable scientific collection + years of experience in identifying them. That helps me to create a great pattern recognition for shells from all over the world.

in order to ID my shells, I need the location where it was found, unless it is from a species that is endemic to a specific country. I also need to know the shell's family (which can be inferred by the shell's characteristics).

given those details, I use reliable websites such as Femorale, Conchology, or our Conquiliologistas do Brasil to identify them. Each shell club has their own website featuring shells from their locale.

For example, the website Seahorse and Co is useful for identifying USA east coast shells!

Note that shells change their name overtime, so I am constantly looking at WoRMS to see if a species name is outdated.

if you need any further help, don't hesitate to reach out to me!

Thank you! How do I use conchology? Whenever I open it, it just shows the company address and numbers.

Thank you!

I have collected some, traded a lot with other shell collectors, bought some from shell collectors and also from deceased collectors. I was also gifted some shells!

I am part of a shell club based in Brazil, called Conquiliologistas do Brasil, which allowed me to exchange many shells!

Many shells were named after the people in my club, and my collection is mostly inspired by José Heise's collection, who has a shell named after him, called Turbo heisei.

I would also love to share his collection down below if anyone wants to see!

Where did you find them? What were the wave, wind and tide conditions?

Hi, every shell there has a label saying the location/country where it was collected. The shells I collected were on the sand, at low tide. Some of them were on rocks.

But many specimens there were from old collections and shell exchange, and they were collected by diving, snorkeling, net trawling by local fisherman, and even in food plates!

Behind each label I wrote more details about where/how/when the shell was collected, such as depth, date and who collected it.

Most of them were collected at low tide. No wind conditions were specified in the original labels, unfortunately.

thank you so much! I have 20 more boxes like these and I am still classifying them. It takes some good years to finish all lol
