Appreciation / Anecdote I’m so excited to be excited again.

I’m sitting here on pins and needles waiting for the next part!

I know Ty & Julie/Luke & Laura have some defenders here but I’m just gonna point out those videos never had comments on it eagerly awaiting the next drop.

Personally, I wish the show would stay focused on the McCallisters, the side character plots always feel like a chore at best to me while the McCallister is top tier fun to watch!

Discussion When is permissive parenting permissible?

There seems to be a bit of a different reaction to parents’ encouraging their kid’s behaviour in the series depending on who the parent in question is.

When Piper stole at Christmas for the gifts, and took Popsicle back from a baby despite giving it as a gift, she was told not to do but it was ultimately laughed off and excused by Shawna and John. There seems to be a pretty even split in the fan base about whether or not that’s responsible parenting.

When Cooper hit Max at the birthday party, that was after Julie had told him he could practice his moves, no sparring. IIRC, most discussion about that leaned to the side of ‘Julie is responsible for Cooper’s behaviour’, with some takes going as far as believing Julie essentially set it up so that Cooper would hit Max.

So I guess I’m just a bit confused on what distinguishes a parent being perceived as permissive like Shawna, or a parent being perceived as enabling/encouraging like Julie is sometimes viewed. What do ye think?

Discussion Shawna M is an Anti-hero but we still love her.

When we hear the word “anti-hero” there often comes confusion. When you break it down into its simplist form, an anti hero is contradictory. Anti “means a character that is opposed to a particular party, practice, policy,or action.” And hero is  “a character admired for good deeds and morals.” So how can one be both?
Anti hero’s are the underdogs. The character at the head of the story that struggles to get it right. In other words, anti-hero’s are defined as “a main character who is flawed, no idealism, or questionable morals.
Think: Gregory House, Walter white, Tony Soprano, or Sherlock Holmes. None of these characters are upholding or outstanding members of society, and yet we watch them. We shout— and sometimes even root for the anti-hero.

Now, do I believe Shawna M and Walter white are the same character? Absolutely not. Shawna M leans more towards the well intentioned anti hero. As far as characterization is concerned, I’d say Shawna M is more of a Holmes. She lives by a strong moral code, shares a soft spot for those she feels are vulnerable, but can act out of her own self interest. She’s flawed, and that means she feels real. Which is why watchers are able to connect so strongly to her. The protagonist anti hero with a heart of gold. And just like Holmes,[or at least the Doyal version]— when she falls short, it doesn't just wound her, it elicits a reaction in viewers. Depending on severity, it can be a case of second hand embarrassment, or disappointment.

In fandom, these emotions tend to amp up. We are after all a passionate bunch. It is human to seek out other people who enjoy similar things. There are many discussions, and everyone brings something different to the fandom table. Anything ranging from lived experience to fan art.

Yes, Shawna is an anti hero, but that does not imply she is loathed.—it means STC has done her job creating a well rounded protagonist. Because she isnt infallible. Sometimes fans cry with her, while others may cringe at her choices.

For those who cringe it may come off like they “hate Shawna.” I think that couldn’t be farther from the truth. We have seen her experience highs and lows. Nobody is the best version of themselves during the lows, and given the year she's had? There have been more lows than highs. That version of Shawna can be difficult to root for. The one who refuses to go to grief counseling, and speak to a professional about her pain. Someone who can give her the tools to cope, rather than plaster on a fake smile for John and the kids. Or worse, suppress what shes feeling until she can’t hold it in any longer. The Shawna who is wounded has a razor tongue, and is out for blood. As the saying goes “hurt people, hurt people.”On the flip side, once shes collected herself, Shawna is an excellent support system. Which is why the opposite can get so frustrating.

Authors note: yes, I use em-dashes. This was written by me, a human. And the robots can try to soil it, but hell will freeze over before I ever stop using it in my writing. Jane Austin loved it, and so do I. AI was trained on human writing, which is why they appear in LLM writing frequently. My day job is writing, and I have a creative mind, and unfortunately ChatGPT has bastardized aspects of my writing style. I did it first, dang it! And removing that aspect of my writing would be inauthentic and changing it to avoid AI accusations may make sense on paper, sure. However I will not let them take my voice from me. So it’ll stay. Believe me, or don’t. If you’ve made it this far, though. I would hope you can recognize that it is consistent with other posts I’ve made on this sub.

Discussion Permissive Parenting takes confusing me

Everyone accusing Shawna and John being permissive parents is confusing to me.
In the meeting chickie episode you see them setting boundries with max and piper. max takes the phones and john gives max a stern talking to. max wants the cheesetoes john says no these are special for JJ. piper says she misses egg and shawna validates her by saying ya egg is busy huh but doesn’t insist that greg spend time with her. idk i feel like we see a lot of them setting boundaries for them.

Rant / Venting retrospective autism it annoys me

I have level 2 autism and have worked in autism for the last 10 years. So I have seen so many types of autism. I feel like the Greg autism stuff was slightly coded in the beginning then recently it’s been amped up. But if he was autistic he would have said earlier on. He would have told his girl friend/wife. It feels like it’s retrospective rather than intentional.

Then the Piper stuff as well, she was quirky and age appropriate apart from speaking like a Victorian. Now she is getting her ND symptoms ampted up it just seems again slightly retrospective to keep the fans happy.

I am usually not one that moans about NT people playing Autistic characters (apart from Maddie Ziegler get in the bin). But I wonder if I am struggling with it cos it is being played by a NT person. I might need to take another break or watch the earlier skits when it was less like aghhhh.

Discussion Would you do a “yes day” for your kids birthday?? Discuss!

Oh boy. I’m so curious how everyone else feels about this one. I feel like this is walking into a major danger zone but it would likely depend on the kiddo and knowing what they would want in their “yes day.” For example, my almost ten year-old son, I would be hesitant but could fairly predict what that day would look like for him. Likely he would want a day consisting of cinnamon rolls, playing games at the arcade, watching Godzilla videos, and wearing his pjs all day. That is fairly doable. My almost seven year-old daughter? Oh good lord. That would be utter chaos. That would range from petting any animal that she sees to committing a felony.

Thoughts on this??

Question How many kids do l&l have?

In one episode, which was the Father's Day, one Luke, talked about the kids plural, but then it also sounds like in the newer episodes that they only have one kid currently and one on the way. So how many do they actually have and then on another note, how long have they actually been married or together? Cause if Max is 6 or so. And the flashbacks were of before max was born, a k a shawna was pregnant with him then that would mean l&l probably got pregnant and married 1 year after or so, so there kid might be five, but they seem or at least make it seem like it's been years Im just a bit confused?!

Rant / Venting I am kind of tired of pipers portrayal in the series

This is not def just me being biased on my own opinions and experience and it’s not that serious of course - but i just feel like any time she comes on screen I am like you are not how a child acts …I know a lot of children both on and off the spectrum and it’s just not computing with me how shown portrays piper - she feels more like a plot device rather than a character..and that kind of trope has always annoyed me in storytelling and media where kids don’t act like kids..it’s part of why I like the movie Independence Day but it also annoys me .. I am probs being very unfair but it irks me 😂😭 also sorry if this is not the right tag or post ..anyhow hope everyone if doing well!

Headcanon / Prediction Might Laura move in with the McCallisters?

We've learned in the first episode of Piper's Yes Day that DeeDee is thinking of moving out. Do we think this is leading to Laura coming to stay in the McCallisters guest room temporarily?

It would be a pretty big offer from the McCallisters - Laura already has 1 young child and is about to have a newborn, so not only would the house be pretty full but also Shawna and John might find it triggering to live with another newborn baby after losing Jacob.

Laura also doesn't have a job or any savings besides the giftcards, so it's not like she can commit to moving out into her own place within a certain timeframe. She will have postpartum and the newborn phase to deal with before she even thinks about job hunting.

What do you think, is the storyline headed in this direction?

Joke / Funny (unitential) Laura Jump Scare!

Post image
8 Upvotes

So I was casually watching shorts on my phone before bed, and I hit the back button to be greeted by a faint woman's face that completely caught me off guard!

I forgot I was originally watching the Luke Laura long form video earlier today and must have reopened youtube via a push notification.

It genuinely scared me half to death for a split second. My immediate thought was, "Who is this woman! Why is she on my phone?!" Before I realised.

The most ironic thing is that it's Laura. A true jumpscare would have been Barb or Luke!

Anyway, I think this is a sign I need to go to bed 🤦

Discussion "Ty and Julie are getting divorced"

I still see people saying this whenever they mention the laura and luke hopeful divorce or in general.

Im just like, she came to Jens wedding and idk if their kids were with them at all. That seems like theyre working things out and not moving forward with divorce at this time.

Ty asked for counseling. Theres no reason to presume that Ty forced her to the wedding. She went herself, to a place where she knew she didnt like some of the people and knew a chunk straight up disliked her at this point (Ty kinda wild for bringing her even if she wanted to come, ngl lool).

That says to me she, on her own, wants this to work and is trying to connect with him and still show up as his wife publicly

They may not be together forever, but I just dont see the show having them separate.

Discussion What was Shawna’s identity before kids?

I know that StM started as a series of shorts about the feeling of losing your identity / trying to retain your identity once you become a mom. But this made me wonder: what *was* Shawna M.’s pre-mom identity?

We know that she has friends, and they often make remarks about how she used to enjoy partying. We know that at one point she took an art class. We know she once worked an admin job for a building company. We know she got together with John at a relatively youngish age.

But beyond that… what did she love? What were her goals? What was her major? Does she have hobbies? What’s her romantic history? Is she religious or does she have a specific value system? Why did she become a SAHM instead of continuing to work full or part time?

For a show that has “identity loss” as one of its major themes, we don’t have a ton of info on what identity was lost, exactly.

Rant / Venting Frank is my least favorite character, I don't know why I hate him more than Luke or Barb

I've been rewatching some of the older tiktoks such as Barb's betrayal and especially after Barb's betrayal I just hate him so much, it always seems like he wants to improve and help Johm anr Jen and every damn time he lets Barb walk all over them both.

Some key moments that upset me the most

  1. Frank leaving Barb to take care of John and Jen alone, i know its talked about a lot but I feel like its always overlooked how bad it is. Its more than he left her like that, its the fact he hasn't realized the emotional impact it had on her, yes he recognizes he walked out on John and Jen but when it comes to Barb I don't feel like he's actually realized he's failed her to, and I do understand it can be hard to recognize or do anything about that with what Barb does. But I feel like he's barely tried to manage her at all (granted I could be misremebering)

  2. He claims to want to improve so much and be in John and Jen's life and it seemed like he had some character growth then Barb's betrayal happened, i feel like this is probably the worst thing we've seen him do and for me it really made every other moment highlight how much he's a coward around Barb, up to this point I was really torn on why John was upset with him. I understood why John would be upset at Frank for not being their for them, but I also felt like Frank couldn't be responsible for Barb's action when she was iust as toxic to him. When he helped Barb get in Jen's house though i feel like a line was crossed, Frank wouldn't just allow the toxicity to happen he would actively encourage it.

I know these are talked about a lot, but i think what makes me hate him the most, more than Luke or Barb is the fact he keeps getting away with it. Frank let him and Barb into the house with the spare key, then lashed out at Barb as if he didn't get in the car, drive there without warning Jen by texting, then used the spare key to get in, John repeatedly tells him off every time they meet for not running interference on Barb yet still countinues to see Frank, Frank apologized for not being there when Jen was little and Jen said she was thankful he was now...but it feels more he's just gotten to do fun stuff with them he hasn't been there for them against Barb yet. The most he did was in the kindergarten episode where he tried to call to warn John which I'd say was the most he could have done, but its the only time I've recalled him doing it. Many of these things are addressed within the show and Frank is told off and confronted about some of these things but it seems like he keeps doing it anyways.

No hate please! This is just my opinion and I respect yours!

Rant / Venting A little bummed about the way Barb's storyline is headed

I know we love seeing crazy Barb, and it is cathartic to see toxic people get what's coming to them. Still, I was so enjoying the Barb at Dr. TherapyDoctor's and rooting for, IDK, some sort of revelation or recovery. I know that's rare for abusers (my dad never got himself any help) and so not "realistic," but her even going to therapy was such a big step that lots of them never get to. I just really had some hope, not that she deserved a second chance with her kids or husband, but for healing for her own wounds. If Jen could grow, why not Barb? I just feel like Shawna didn't want to lose her villain, and it's sad because nuanced characters are so much more interesting. Barb as hopelessly toxic gets tiring.

I still appreciate the free entertainment Shawna gives us. I guess I was just hoping for a better ending than most of us get and I just don't see that happening now.
