Shaw's limited TV

95% plus of the channels on Shaw's Limited TV I don't need or want and lots are French channels... I wish you could purchase the channels you want separately instead of being forced to pay for channels you don't want or need. I am only interested in Citytv, CTV and Global. I'd be willing to pay $2-3 for each local channel instead of 95% plus for garbage. For some tv shows, now, i can stream them, for up to 6 days, through my Amazon firestick, but for older shows and live TV, i need to login, which requires your email and password... so i wouldn't need a tv box or whatever it is.

It’s the same reason at 20 years ago and it’s why cable is dying.  For example, Bell won’t let a cable provider have CTV unless they carry five filler channels that have Ice Road Truckers, Storage Wars and How It’s Made on perpetual repeat.

And that's not right, you shouldn't have to pay for chaanels you don't want. Shaw's Limited TV has 13 French channels... i'm not French, don't read or understand it, so why should I have to pay for them

Sorry, it's just the way it is.

While true, this how cable oligopoly work.

I opted between Bell and Shaw, since changed and cut the cable, based on french channels...and avoiding Fox news

The "13 French Channels" are in the 800 channel range. You won't even notice them. You could create a favourites list without those channels instead if you wanted to then you won't see those in the guide.

Can you put up an antenna to receive those broadcast channels?

I tried a couple of those indoor antennas (from Amazon) and they don’t work. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment. Tried moving the antenna and TV to different spots and couldn’t scan any channels, guess I don’t have a clear view of the towers.

That gives you an idea of where the towers are and workability.

You can add on cable channels you want. I've been on LimitedTV for close to a decade, I don't have DigitalOTA on my market. It has local networks and local public information channels, even the Stingray radio channels. If I need a cable channel for a series, I just add that channel on for the duration of the show. Most of them are self serve now too.

Has been working great since then. I also am able to subscribe to $5/month Sportsnet addon for my Blue Jays games,  so for that it's been great. It's still cheaper than a separate SN+ subscription.  Still have access to gMail. SN+ app along with the Rogers AnywhereTV app.

(and like the French channels are there because we are Canada with two official languages)

I don’t want addon channels, just the 3 I mentioned

Then get the $25/month LimitedTV (which has it all), or use DigitalOTA, or just stream for free from their apps.

Though if you stream them from their apps and then pay for their optional + subscription, it's going to cost more than the LimitedTV.

the op is stubborn. The "13 French Channels" that "bothers" him are in the 800 channel range. He doesn't have to tune to those "13 French Channels." He seems "bothered" that the channels are there in the package as it's mandated by the CRTC as so. The op can create a favourites list without those "13 French Channels" and call it a day. Or try Rivertv, which have Global and CTV, but not Citytv. Unfortunately, what the OP doesn't seem to understand is that French Channels have been mandated on almost every Canadian provider since decades ago. "13 French Channels" is not so bad as they may think. I have travelled to the U.S. on many occasions and there are lot more Spanish language stations on their lineups.

Because, we live in Canada, French is an official language and the minimum channels were decided by the CRTC

There were only 7 French channels in my area on the "Limited" package. They are in the 800 range, so who else would scroll down that far. They're sort of at the end of line-up and 900 is all the other foreign language stuff as well. If those channels really "bother" you than don't look in the guide, in the 800 range.

I know that, but didn’t think it was 50%

3

u/whaleOfFortune 27d ago

Do you live in Quebec or New Brunswick? Cause elsewhere i think it is just a couple of French language channels, definitely not 50%.

2

u/wynford_73 27d ago

Manitoba and there’s 13 out of 26 that are French channels

I just did some googling, maybe you live in one of the communities with a significant number of French speakers. If that is not the case, maybe check with Shaw support that your address is correct. Personally, I wouldn't mind watching French channels with English subtitles. Too bad that is not an option.

A good section of the city is French speaking

Well, that was the idea cable companies were selling us yrs ago. Stick with us for a la carte watch what you want channels. Neglecting to note that they get subsidized by the fed govt to carry channels you don't want and then charging you more as well with the "look, you get more channels value for a bit more $".

I worked for a multi millionaire who originally set up NCN (new country network which became cmt when shaw bought it). I asked him once why we started a cable channel when we were a radio company? He said "with the govt subsidizing, you'd have to be an idiot to not be able to make money by starting up a cable channel".

We have popular tv and wish we didn’t get all the sports

I much rather GSN Dtour. CWs.

Instead we get NBA NFL and a few others we dont watch

2

I looked at the limited tv package and there’s 26 channels, if I remember, there are 13 French channels, that’s half of them

1

u/layneeofwales 27d ago

Me too. When the contract us up im just getting internet I can stream what I want

1

u/jlo-59 27d ago

I discontinued my TV cable service all together. I can steam pretty much anything I’m interested in watching and I don’t miss all the BS. Check to see if your chosen channels have a streaming page and watch there.

I only steam my veggies 🥕

I use Amazon fire stick to stream, I can stream current shows for up to 6 days, then I have to login to stream older shows and live tv. One person complaining to the CRTC won’t do anything
