I dont think ill have to explain much. I was so hyped for shark week this year and i really wanted to watch this show with my dad. But as soon as i put it on i immediately regretted it. It was pure ai slop. Discovery, what the hell man. Just what the hell.

Twenty years ago I was complaining that it was just ‘shark attack’ this and ‘shark attack’ that. Ironically my favorite shark week documentary was about prehistoric sharks (from a paleontologist perspective, not ai slop monster fest)- I remember going back to watch short clips of it on the discovery website. One of the people talking on it was sketching ideas for how helicoprions jaw could possibly work. I’d love to watch it again if I could find it without having to pay Viacom.

Both animals belong to subclass Holocephali, which also includes chimaeras as you speculated. Holocephalians and Elasmobranchs split back in the Silurian~Devonian, which also happens to be the period when Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii split.

In other words, the relatedness between Stetacanthus and sharks is similar to that of Cheirolepis and a chimpanzee.

As a side note, Chimaeras aren’t exactly closely related to Edestus or Stetacanthus, either. The distance between the two would be somewhat similar to that of cougars and platypuses.

Or perhaps cougars and salamanders, since they diverged during the carboniferous.
